I'm finally reading this paper but my first thought is anybody on earth good at predicting how long a task will take them....? Setting aside the small person sample, randomizing the tasks within developer is....super odd? Wouldn't we start to expect a lot of order effects?

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Look I know it was a mistake to turn Haliburton and Fox into the norcal Bulls, but I think a series of nationwide protests is really kicking Sacramento when it's down.

there really seems to be a strange “green lantern theory of fascism” that some people on this website have internalized, in which the white house’s desire for martial law — it’s desire for organized repression — is tantamount to a guarantee that it will happen

Here's a @mattyglesias.bsky.social substack post idea: - Climate change an birth-rate decline are very similar types of issues in that they're long term threats to our way of life with no clear solutions - People who care about one tend to not care about the other - That's weird!

Underrated source of male loneliness: women tend to form close relationships through parenting, but men generally don't. As men spend more time parenting they tend to shift time away from relationship-forming activities.

Falling birth rates and climate change are really similar problems in that they're huge threats to our way of life and nobody has any idea how to fix either of them, but it seems like people are either worried about one or the other, but rarely both.

About a year into working with AI coding tools and I can't overstate how I'm just way better at everything work related. I'm faster, better able to learn new things, and less likely to make mistakes.

in slightly-early honour of St Patricks Day, I will once again remind the world of the time Amazon united Ireland (and apologized for the Troubles), still one of my favourite moments on twitter

Python annoyance, I often write functions in other .py files and use them in a notebook, but I don't want those imports to be cached. I.e. when I edit the function and run the import chunk I want the updated function, not the cached version.

An example of how Trump really doesn't have a plan: two weeks ago the Canadian conservative party was both very pro-Trump and very likely to form a majority government. Those are both less likely after the Tarrifs.

The thing Americans don't get about Canada is that underneath the pleasant demeanour is a profound ability to tolerate suffering. We get through winter every year; we'll get through the trade war.
