It is done. Two months of playing, five games, three regions. I have successfully assembled a complete generation 3 living dex from scratch. What an incredible journey. A feat I dreamed of as a starry-eyed kid playing Emerald for the first time and wanting to experience every bit of it.

Pokemon Emerald was my first Pokemon game, and I poured hundreds of hours into it as a kid. I tried my hardest to complete the national dex, but because I didn't have every gen 3 game and had limited access to in-person trading, I was never quite able to do it. Well, now I'm finally going to. 🧵

Completed my first ever remote trade in Pokemon Go with a Japanese friend - shiny Sawk in exchange for a shiny Throh! Very cool to trade stuff with international friends that's common in our home region but rare in the other's. 🥳

The Celebi Home reward for finishing the FRLG dex not being able to be transferred into FRLG just kinda blows, man. That means even after they release RSE, the national dex in the Switch gen 3 games will be impossible to complete without glitzer popping, and that just kinda sucks the fun out of it.

(Oh so I thought glitzer popping was a catch-all term for ACE in gen 3 but it specifically refers to the Pomeg glitch in Emerald. You can also generate Pokemon with the mail glitch in FRLG, but the point still stands: that just kinda feels like cheating and not really fun.)

While it is a major pain in the ass thanks to the Johto starters and beasts, it is technically possible to complete the gen 3 dex with just the GBA games (with all the event islands unlocked), minus Celebi and Jirachi. I presume Jirachi's going to be the Home reward for the Hoenn dex.

So Pokemon from FRLG on cartridge don't get the GBA origin mark in Home. Disappointing but not exactly surprising. This Home update really was "the bare minimum".

For those wondering: Pokemon caught in Kanto in HGSS still display as from Johto when transferred up. So a Pokemon that displays as from Kanto with a met location of Poke Shifter is 100% from FRLG. It would have been easy to tell them apart to give them a GBA origin mark. They just didn't do it.

Oh cool, Home support's here for FRLG on Switch. Sure would be nice to have the time to play that instead of having to devote all my Pokemon time to pre-Bankmageddon panic hunts.

It's really infuriating that Pokemon Go is now locking fighting Giovanni behind finishing event-specific Go Passes. I play literally every day and I can never finish these things. I beat all 3 Rocket Admins during the event, which used to be enough to do Giovanni. But not anymore.

I've been keeping track of how many resets I do for Jirachi each day. I have a personal goal of doing at least 40 per day, which is what I had calculated I'd need to do to get to odds by Bank shutdown day. Proud to say I kept the pace for the entire month of September!

Most days I do double or even triple the goal, but I give myself that wiggle room in case I'm not super feeling it that day or just don't have a lot of free time. I'm nearly halfway to odds now, so if I continue like this, I should be at odds around mid-November!

Sometimes in the middle of grinding out long full odds hunts, you've gotta boot up Legends Arceus and do a massive mass outbreak for a quick shot of dopamine

I don't really love the current state of Overwatch unfortunately - tried to pick it back up recently but its character roster is just WAY too fucking bloated after 10 years of constant updates, and the monetization has gotten way more scummy since going F2P. But 2016-18 Overwatch was magical.

I suppose that's the shame about falling in love with a live service game, there's always the potential for it to change and become worse. At least every other game up here is in its completed state and nothing can change that.

I'm not much of a Pokémon person, but my son is & trying to buy him cards at retail prices has been nigh on impossible the last couple of years, and I refuse to pay scalpers for anything. So it warms the cockles of my heart to see so many of them having a full meltdown about the recent set. Enjoy!!

Years ago I got a used copy of Omega Ruby from my wife's cousin. He had hacked to give himself Hoopa and Eternal Flower Floette, and they can't be transferred to Home because they fail legality checks. So they've been sitting in a "Hacker jail" Bank box, and I intend to let them burn down with Bank.

I transferred the LeafGreen one up since I figured that would be the more problematic of the two, and I managed to get it into Home without it being flagged. But strangely, it states it's from the Hoenn region despite having never touched a Hoenn game:

Some people were curious how this worked, so I tested it by trading a Black Flute to my LeafGreen - and I can confirm that a hard reset (playing the flute, saving, and then shutting the system off completely) does work!

Apparently this also works in FRLG, but in those games, the flag is instead used when you have the effect of a Black Flute active. So it's a little trickier since you can't natively get a Black Flute in FRLG, you have to trade one in from a Hoenn game.

So it was recently discovered that you CAN redeem Channel Jirachi in Emerald - if you've specifically beaten Roxanne at least 4 times. For whatever reason, Emerald's internal flag for having done that is the same flag that R/S uses for entering the Hall of Fame. Sounds weird, but yeah, it works!
