Great video from @stephenrobles.com generously recommending @shareshot.app for our iPhone Duo support. I have some minor improvements coming soon too. If you watch this video and like some of the indie apps in there remember to rate and review them for their efforts!

Version 2.0.5 for macOS is in the App Store now and is 100% less beachballsy™ on the start screen!

PSA: if you're on macOS 27 Shareshot 2.0.4 may be a bit "beachbally" when you are at the "start" screen. SwiftUI is having a bad time working out how to lay out that screen but only on macOS 27 it seems! Fix incoming hopefully tonight. Workaround: keep a session open, don't press "X".

If you’re interested in how I made that long thread, I posted it on Buffer having brought in all the screenshots that need framing into Shareshot for Mac in a single batch. I then just dragged all the files out into a folder, and pulled the ones I needed for each post in the thread in Buffer.

You can keep adding images to the batch as you go and... inside tip: you can drag them all out in one action by dragging the preview OR you can drag individual images out from the sidebar.

In order to ship we skipped compact landscape layout, as we don’t support this on the phone anyway. We may revisit that later but it’s very problematic — we need a large inspector area for the styling UI.

Avoiding the fold in open landscape meant we had to move all our bottom bar controls from a symmetric centered layout to a leading layout, notice the green indicator has moved when folded because it has more variable length.

The inspector caused a lot of pain, as the automatic conversion of it to a large modal when you close the device was bad, covering the preview. We had to do ugly things to detect the hinge closing and auto-hide the inspector but the result is pretty good. We’ll have to see it on a real device.

To help with this we reorganised them and added a section for ideas to help you learn what the app can do. We had to make them scrollable to handle open portrait post and various iPad sizes. Again this improved iPad/Mac too.

The vertical toolbar wasn’t an issue for us at all as it happened; although it does make bottom sheets look weird in closed poses, and the inspector page picker has a big gap above it in landscape, that iOS 27 on iPad does not have.

Open landscape pose on Duo works like an iPad with both inspector and sidebar, although it is a little tight. We made it so the sidebar goes over the content preview in that pose, unlike on iPad and Mac.

Big change #2 was a surprise and actually came right at the end. When you have no screenshots open, we show big action buttons. This looks very empty on open poses so we had to rework it. We also needed to make it avoid the fold in landscape. We couldn’t do that for partial fold in portrait yet.

So change #1 is the addition of a mini “input selector” built into the compact bottom sheet style inspector we use on the phone for times the sidebar can’t fit. This gives a Duo in closed or open portrait pose a layout like a regular phone.

Switching input image in a batch required closing and reopening the sheet every time without this mini selector. This is however a great improvement for regular iPhone users too. You tap a button in the inspector to reveal the input images.

“Just dealing with the fold” already seemed daunting but turns out, there can be a lot more to it. Trying to make a rich editor-based app like this work on something sometimes much bigger than a phone but too small for full iPad apps is tough. It sometimes requires an “in-between” layout…

We use sidebar and inspector on iPad and Mac. These do work on Duo but the space you have left for content is not enough if you want to use both while seeing the content preview in open portrait pose.

New iPhone day for many of you! You may notice Shareshot says something like "Unknown device - no frames for your device". Well, the stupid computer is lying to you. It has frames! If it defaults to 17 Pro or 16 because you just upgraded, go and select 18 Pro. It will remember that from now on! 🤦‍♂️

…and that of course now includes iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and iPhone Duo. If you're seeing crashes on 27 OSes, update to 27 final. There were bugs in the beta OSes (who knew?!) that caused crashes, now fixed by Apple.

📣 If you want to frame screenshots or mockups for Duo/18 Pro/Pro Max devices you can right now (requires Pro): 1. Go to developer.apple.com/design/re... 2. Download bezels and drag one PNG at a time from the .dmg to Shareshot This creates a "custom frame" for each one, like magic. "BYO frames" 😃

There is a wrinkle here - the Outer (Open) Duo frame does not get detected correctly for amusing reasons. 2.0.2 will fix it!

PSA: if you want to create mockups for iPhone Duo inside screen, the frames from Apple expect a screen resolution of 2007×2853 for the inner screen. This is larger than the actual resolution of the inner screen. Seems like they are rendering as if inner display was 460ppi like the outer screen.

Shareshot just got a big 2.0 update, adding batch editing, privacy redactions and images from text or links. Single-screenshot framing with backgrounds and shadows is now free, with no watermark!

Sadly it seems XCancel have had to suspend their service until Space Karen's lawyers can be dealt with. Nothing screams strength and integrity like legal intimidation! Sorry this means the new XCancel feature will not produce valid links for now. Clearly Shareshot 2's use of it was the last straw

We'll disable the feature in the next release, hoping it or an equivalent service will return. Meanwhile, using Shareshot to create images from X posts remains a great free (in cost and hassle) way to share posts from the bad place. Just paste the URL and you're done! No screenshot required.

Hey 2.0.1 is already out with a ton of post launch fixes and a few sneaky improvements, including: - Option to use XCancel links when creating graphics for links to X posts. - Improved handling of Markdown lists following paragraphs. - Main toolbar now extends over inspector on iPad. …

- The background picker could stop scrolling properly on macOS. - Window tabs now have titles, New Tab and the + button now work on macOS and iPadOS. - Resetting background adjustments by tapping the background again did not always work.
