When I think about Brexit harms I think about @gailmyerscough.co.uk and the damage it did to her ability to sell to customers in Europe. She has exactly the sort of small business politicians all love to say they support.

Also, every time she sells something the world gets a bit more bright and colourful and it makes me grumpy that we don’t all want that.

Hello members of the House of Lords 👋 Welcome to the debate on jury trials. Pull up a seat - everyone disagrees and the entire thing is on fire. But, sadly for you, it lands in your lap today👇🏼

This is just the maddest argument. These people would trap us in poverty to keep a decade old commitment, which no one ever actually made, to an electorate which no longer exists.

The news from Serbia is grounds for elation (although the enthusiasm with which it is suggested that all the new representatives should be academics suggests the enthusiasts have never sat on an academic committee)

Just floated this with P and she did a very good impression of a Chancery Master who has had a bad day.

One last shot at turning my frown upside down before the new week begins - I’m going to see the Social Reckoning which I’m hoping will be a light-hearted treat.

The storm is raging outside, the streets are deserted, the wind is howling. And just beyond the noise of the hammering rain and gusts of wind I can faintly hear an ice cream van.

The second is an elderly audience member talked non-specifically about “how society is going” and everyone is expected immediately to acknowledge that this is a “genuine concern” that must be dealt with by sage nods and empathy.

No-one ever says “What are you talking about? What does the world you want look like? How are you proposing to get there?”

First, Peter Chappell paid the habitual tribute to Farage’s supposed gifts as a politician. But the truth is that like all populists he plays politics on easy mode.

Scaring older people and telling others that their worst prejudices are virtuous is not a challenging task. Doing it without ever developing even the basics of a policy platform that is anything more than “we’ll be cruel to the people you fear” is facile.

Pleased to see that Slow Horses is renewed to cover the most recent two books. But without revealing spoilers, it’s hard to see how the basic plot premise of one of them is consistent with what has happened in this series.

Our plan, I gather, is for a “distinctively British” approach to AI which will have none of the risks but all of the benefits. No other nation would have thought of just having the upsides. Makes you proud. 🇬🇧

Contemplating the Facebook Nostalgia Paradox. Life was much better in the old days. *but* Life was much harder in the old days meaning that those alive then are the moral superiors of those who weren’t.

Reading this was the most fun I had today.

There is a free speech angle to this: Should Sophie be able to freely express her views *and* not be condemned & ostracised for it via loss of opportunity/income etc.? The answer is No, her views are not protected in law. She is in the FAFO space. rolandmcs.substack.com/p/has-free-s...

I guess now we find out how many Reform voters had convinced themselves the allegations of racism were bad faith attacks on patriots and for how many it was always the point.

Trump’s notion that Europe should just go back to energy dependence on Russia and military dependence on the US is mind-melting.
