Story idea: we are x years in the future and there’s an ageing generation of those who still know the old art of “thinking” independently of computers In a race against the machines (😉), a few remaining humans try to rescue those skills against the rise of LLM, human mortality & dementia

I wish Google would stay out of all the other things and bring back an actually useful search engine I don’t want anything else from them, just the original product

Springer Nature and Google DeepMind collaborate to enhance the peer review experience group.springernature.com/gp/group/med... I guess something like this was unavoidable. I wonder what the workflow will look like.

Other every day fixes for the PM to consider, I’ll start: - when a train company leaves you stranded they should pay for the taxi - when a job requires you to live somewhere they should pay for the move #everydayFixes

Normalise emailing people to say you read and enjoyed their work. Academia can be a bleak conveyorbelt of endless negative feedback. Sometimes it's hard to know whether anyone values your work. That's why it means so much when someone takes the time to message and say so! Be that person.

Emailed them. And they responded. And corrected it. Thank you Always call stuff out, don’t think oh they’re probably right, oh they do this on purpose, etc

Hey @theguardian.com how is this correct, wanna check your maths? How can “on average” be the same as the possible top of nhs payscale? 🤔 (And before we get into this in surgery you become a consultant after a minimum of 6+2+2+6 years - many have phds and fellowships on top)

I happened to be in London 2004 when this was happening. And despite being an F1 fan, I’m glad it’s not ecclestons vision but @london.gov.uk ‘s vision which won. Oxford street pedestrianised - may it be successful, green and bring people spaces to relax www.theguardian.com/uk/2004/jul/...

How many people would cycle down Oxford street in past? I certainly would not even attempt too. But yes more bike lanes and routes needed, but maybe celebrate this one and don’t always be so negative

🚲🚶‍♂️ Our CEO Tom Fyans down at the new pedestrianised Oxford Street this morning... 👍 We're all in favour of this move, but where are our safe alternate cycle routes?! 👨‍💻 Send an email to Westminster Council to ask them to start work on new safe cycle routes near Oxford Street: buff.ly/Fhm8R18

That rainbow was a nice touch

I've always believed Oxford Street could be so much more than a road. Today we begin a new chapter as the nation’s high street goes traffic free, creating a place where people can spend time, enjoy the atmosphere and experience the very best of our city.

👏

Thanks so much to student journalist Brendan Fijol, who allowed what was supposed to be a fluff piece on a new faculty book to instead highlight the catastrophic state of academic labor at GU & beyond, and the coordinated attacks on thought since 2020. + @devingarofalo.bsky.social

I read this realising I have become a “casualized knowledge worker” What a succinct way of describing this

I’m on a train Were in a field Thankfully we are getting updates This is the sort of only in England experience that makes me lovehate this place “We don’t know why we are stopping here” “We don’t usually stop here” “I hope things are ok”

A colleague's train was delayed recently and they were told the Swan Removal Team had been called.

Kasia@scullingmonkey.bsky.social

We are getting an update that it was “a family of four” And a brief lesson on “swans are protected by the crown” with a side comment of “we cannot simply plough into them like …” (announcer stops themselves) Followed by advice to use delay repay scheme if applicable

Wouldn't have happened in Her Majesty's day. Under Charles, these feathery bastards have lost their discipline

We are reassured that other trains going past would also stop for the swans. Swan safety is priority. We might be able to see the swans. But will have to travel slower past the swans

Further apologies to new travellers joining on this station, summarising the swan situation and saying “you think this might be some sort of excuse” before educating everyone once again on the special status swans hold.

And with that- my part of - this journey ends as others continue onwards, with the support of the regular announcements I’m assured. Why drive if you could have such experiences? #chooseTrains

From time to time someone still asks me: really, you haven't gone back? FFS, I don't change my mind about *much* harder ethical decisions that *actually cost me a lot that matters.* Why would I change my mind about this thing?

Emailing me on a Friday with something non urgent and then again on Monday 7am in case “I lost the email” will not get you the result you think it would

people who haven’t realised that dealing with climate change is one of the urgent ways to reduce future conflict, are simply not seeing the world around them

Friends, if you were giving a talk about using AI safely for teaching / learning, what would be the things you’d want to be mentioned Not looking for one sided views. The good. The bad. The “I want to hide away” as much as “AI is the best tutor”

In this script, I am Bond

But the question everyone in Oxford is asking - where does botley Road bridge sit

Absolutely insane numbers on data center buildout. I haven’t vetted these by they’re about right based on memory/back of the envelope.
