My wife was diagnosed with hemochromatosis in 2008. Her health has been something of a nightmare ever since. Helping ourselves and others understand this pernicious genetic condition has been part of our coping strategy. In 2009, I started the Facebook page:

Here's my just published interview with Eric Schmitt, CISO of insurance & risk firm Sedgwick.

Abdul El-Sayed is a Rhodes Scholar, with degrees from the University of Michigan, Oxford, and Columbia.
84% of Rhodes Scholars are Democrats or Independents, compared with just 14% Republicans.
It’ll be great having Abdul in the Senate.
I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise.
The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
Pro-Europeans really need to get their act together if they're going to sieze the opportunity which is being presented here. Press and broadcasters reverting right back to their previous position from 2016, with zero update.
Another story impossible to imagine in any other administration: the president's son goes hunting with a Russian criminal who is part of Putin's security entourage
The remote rendezvous in August highlights the remarkable relationship between a son of the US president and a businessman with ties to the Kremlin. ft.trib.al/9g7wnme
CBS deleted this post and reposted it admitting that their original one was misleading. And the misleading post from CBS was intentionally misleading, not an innocent mistake. CBS continues to lose credibility.
I really like this take from @xriskology.bsky.social in their aptly named Realtime Techpocalypse Newsletter. Just one point I'd argue: the finitude of bugs. We are at the point where new bugs are generated faster that the capacity to fix them. What needs fixing is our willingness to exploit them.
TFW you go to the doctors office to pick up your blood test forms and they don’t have them because they can’t print them because the system is down, not just in that office but “lots of places … and it could be down for another week, so maybe call us back in about 10 days.”
New article about (1) whether AI-enabled hackers could shut down the Internet, and (2) how the Effective Altruist movement is effectively taking over the world. Read and share, if you have the time: www.realtimetechpocalypse.com/p/could-ai-a...
Catholic Bishops, from a church notorious for raping children without consent, prays with a president also notorious for raping children without consent, get touchy about the White House posting a video of the event [checks notes] without consent.
Christopher Hale: Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of Milwaukee apologized on Sunday for praying over President Trump in the Oval Office last week, and he accused the White House of posting video of the prayer without the bishops’ consent
Anthony Davis: “Who exactly are this 31% of Americans who think this lazy tyrant, this dollar-store dictator, this narcoleptic nincompoop is doing a good job?”
Canadian married to an American, dentist trained in America, father of American child, volunteers at American church dental clinic, no criminal record. Does this sound like the worst of the worst to you?!

Trump admin arrests Colorado priest.
Incarcerates him for over a year.
Judge orders him released without charges.
They release him without the wheelchair he needs -- other prisoners have to bodily carry him out.
He's now being tested for latent TB:

Just to be clear...
Prop 40 is a ONE-TIME retroactive tax.
It applies ONLY to billionaires and would tax just 5% of their wealth — which grew 30% in 2025.
California's billionaires would still be worth $2T+ AFTER the tax.
The revenue will fund healthcare for millions of Californians.
Vote YES.
I keep seeing posts from Republicans pretending to be insulted by Barack Obama's Cheesecake Factory quip because most Americans supposedly think it serves haute cuisine.
First, it does not. And you know that.
Second, his remark wasn't about the food. It was about the over-the-top golden decor.
On learning of an exciting new walking robot he might be able to buy, what is the first thing an English geek does?
Ask the Internet, "anyone got footage of microduck walking on carpet?"

Speaking of music and discovery, I can't let October pass without a shout out to The Saloon in San Francisco. It turned 165 this month! First time I met Chey see asked me: "Do you like sleazy bars with great music?" I said yes, so she took me here and we got down to Johnny Nitro & The Door Slammers.
Sadly Johnny Nitro passed in 2011, but the Door Slammers still play The Saloon, and because it's San Francisco, you never know who might sit in with them. On our first time there (1985), it was legendary guitarist John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service).
TIL: The Clash covered Pressure Drop, the classic song from Toots & The Maytals! If you're in the path of Storm Boleo here in the UK, I hope this helps you sit it out. Stay safe lovely blue sky people!
