One of the more depressing features of the past decade has been seeing how quickly and easily the right abandoned the genuinely good principles it once pretended to care about. Free trade; federalism; free speech. They jettissoned everything they had a point about & kept all the loathesome bits.

George Takei@georgetakei.bsky.social

Trump and his MAGA movement have mastered the art of projection, accusing the left of doing what they themselves have done. But now, Trump has taken that to a new level, becoming the manifestation of an oppressive state that the right has always warned against. So why aren't more sounding the alarm?

My (Chicago) congressman is a worthless mediocrity. Trump is about to commence a military occupation of the city, and here's his latest post:

Chicago is one of the most dangerous cities for birds. My bill will help change that by requiring all federal buildings to use bird-safe materials nationwide.

All prohibitionism is the same. Once a brain has sunk into the delusion that it is possible to control others' behaviors and thoughts, and the moral imbecility that it is right and good to impose such controls on others who do not desire it, there is no bottom.

We are seven months in, and the speed with which vital civic institutions are capitulating to authoritarian demands we once would have regarded as inconceivable in an established liberal democracy is jawdropping. I hadn't thought I was polyannaish about America, but it's really stunning.

This is a pretty ridiculous conclusion to draw from the article. All he's saying is that the New York case was purely political, and really was unjustified from a legal perspective. And he's right! You can hate Trump, as I do, and still recognize that fact.

The other cases against Trump, especially the classified documents case, were completely legit and should have led to Trump being in jail. It's ironic that the one conviction we managed to get was on the bullshit charge.

I don't make a habit of parsing the statements of Jake Tapper, so maybe he's said something *else* that demonstrates that he's leaning towards Trump. But nothing in this article is incompatible with being anti-Trump.

Democratic socialists and other leftists often just cannot be persuaded that capitalism is not, in some way, the final boss of politics, even behind the fascists. But they're wrong, they've always been wrong. Fascism, reaction, these things don't rise out of capitalism, they're distinct.

This is what I mean about worrying about demsocs interpreting the current crisis through a lens of wishful thinking This is not "ordinary people vs elites" this is America vs the people who hate it. MAGA is a brainrot, not a class

Many of the people who fall into the first category referenced here no longer even refer to themselves as libertarians, for what it’s worth, because the second category—and the Libertarian Party—have ruined the label.

Aaron Ross Powell@aaronrosspowell.com

There are two kinds of libertarians: Those who oppose the state because they reject hierarchy and oppression, and view the state as the main tool for imposing both, and those who oppose the state because they support hierarchy and oppression and view the state as the main barrier to achieving both.

Called it.

Many people have the naive belief that the courts will stop Trump. Well, what if he just ignores their rulings? The judicial branch doesn't have its own police force. It depends on the executive to enforce its orders, and Trump is purging everyone in the DOJ who isn't loyal to him personally.

Unfortunately the bifurcation of everyone who used to be on Twitter into two separate platforms has made both websites way more likely to take the bait for shit that confirms whatever their priors are.

The reply email inbox for this “what did you do last week” email is HR@opm.gov, so, you know, definitely don’t send them any unrelated messages that would interfere with their ability to carry out Elon’s dumbass bullshit

Never was an AOC fan but times have changed. I'll support anyone who opposes the coup.

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

No, they don't. They also don't realize that Trump is on the verge of ignoring court orders reversing his illegal actions.

Really strange watching the American government become hostile to Canada, western Europe, and Mexico in order to cozy up to the dictatorships of eastern Europe. Do Americans even know this is happening? Do they have any idea what this means for their lives?

If you made a list of all the unlawful, corrupt, and evil things Trump has done just since the start of his term, it would far outstrip in its venality the list of charges against King George in the Declaration of Independence.

Many people have the naive belief that the courts will stop Trump. Well, what if he just ignores their rulings? The judicial branch doesn't have its own police force. It depends on the executive to enforce its orders, and Trump is purging everyone in the DOJ who isn't loyal to him personally.

It's darkly funny that the end of the American Experiment is coming because of this completely ridiculous man, this utter failure and blowhard, a game show host whom absolutely nobody took seriously for almost his entire time as a public figure.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree with this.

A conclusion I’ve sort of dragged myself to kicking and screaming, given my ideological priors, is that we were ultimately a lot better off with three networks and a couple local papers as our only real news sources.

Dreamt I dialed a friend. A stranger answers: "This is Steve Smittelgluck." "Oh, sorry, I must have the wrong number," I say. "Oh really? Then why do you have 'Insult Steve Smittelgluck' on your to-do list?" I look at my hand-written list, and sure enough, there it is. Well, this is awkward.

Jesse is harmful to the trans community - many of whom were instrumental in making Bluesky what it is I love it here - but I want it to be safe & inclusive. I don’t want to see trans users & elders leave because mods won’t stand up to a bigot This isn’t about his “views”… it’s about what he *does*

It’s so funny that half of Bluesky was like “yes we must kill all the CEOs and then dance in their blood” but Jesse Singal’s mere presence is what led to the dumb company actually having to be like “let’s discuss moderation”
