Histories of technologies that don’t also consider the impact on the lives of the workers that developed, used, and were displaced by them are not worth reading. Labor histories and histories of technology are inextricable linked fields of inquiry.

The idea that a market crash will correct the behavior of the ultra wealthy corporate class responsible for developing the conditions under which the crash occurs requires blinding oneself to the history of almost every other crash.

Weekly Roundup: Omer Ein-Habar on the original sewer socialists, Ioannis Kampourakis on law as a produce force, and Yochai Benkler on the legal transformation of capitalism. Plus, a junior faculty forum, a call for book reviews, democracy's death by consultancy, and more!

One more reason to consider a 200-judge SCOTUS.

James Grimmelmann@jtlg.bsky.social

Because four of the Justices have book contracts with a party's corporate parent, the Supreme Court LACKS A QUORUM to hear BMG v. Vetter, and one of the worst copyright decisions in recent memory is affirmed by default. It's just one bad look after another. www.supremecourt.gov/docket/docke...

Great discourse on intellectual community this morning, and I just want to add that pushing course caps, teaching loads, and the institutional churn of structural precarity increasingly forces scholars into narrower, lonelier working conditions.

The socialist Left has no vision for what the content of publicly funded education should be. Universal, free access to what, exactly? "Free college," but what are you supposed to learn there? If you defer to institutions, then they'll use taxpayer dollars to make everything into a business school.

Absolutely. I think of slop as an explicit rejection of a mode of production

Damon Kiesow@kiesow.net

So “slop” is the negative externalities imposed on consumers by the imposition of synthetic communications by profit-seeking entities.

I can’t decide which of these descriptions I love most, but I desperately want to play bass in a band that sounds like “ABBA played by he Sonics.”

Just brought my kids to see Coyote v Acme and it’s great except kind of unrealistic about litigation. The movie vastly underplays the amount of dynamite used in trying a typical civil case.

Our nurses are the backbone of Massachusetts, and they deserve fair pay and good conditions. They fight tirelessly for us—we need to fight tirelessly for their rights. I stand with the Brigham Nurses and the Massachusetts Nurses Association and I urge all parties to come to the bargaining table.

I threw a fist into the air while listening on the subway when @nikobowie.bsky.social raised the history of Congress eliminating court jurisdiction to enjoin certain labor disputes. There is good history in labor law to draw from if we are going to constrain the courts. Can't wait to read the book!

Not going to gawk at western mass communities that I am not a part of, but it's beautiful how people go to great lengths to create community with very difficult people. The Globe's closing quote: "we just hope that there’s more repair than conflict...that’s the price you pay to be in community."

You get to speak at union rallies more often as a labor law professor than as a labor lawyer, but less often than as a union officer. This is my main takeaway from my career so far.

Lebron's life will not be noticeably different for doing these ads in any respect but one: a lot of people who respected him will think less of him now. His legacy is cheapened.

Where’s the write-up for people who are politically homeless because they have anarchist tendencies the more rigorous marxists reject? Why is it always center-right weirdos who get features?
