Great to see @mariacannon.bsky.social & @uophistory.bsky.social students Mel, Evelyn & Serena sharing their research on women of the 'Mary Rose' at today's Faculty Best Practice Showcase!
This came from their 'Working with the Past' module, & was shared publicly at the 'Our Naval City' festival!
Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️

NEW BLOG POST!
For #BlackHistoryMonth, we've uncovered (some of!) the life & story of Joe Armley - one of Britain's first railway workers of colour!
Discover Joe's story, from St Lucia to London in the 1890s, working on the railway.
And what's more - images of Joe at work exist! #RailwayHistory
Could centuries of secrecy about who owns our land soon end?
A new government consultation proposes revealing who owns up to 95% of England and Wales.
To stop this being blocked by big landowners, I need your help to send in supportive evidence. Here’s how:

Today we also posted on the work of Prof Wendy Davies, an RHS Workshop Grant recipient in 2026.
Wendy's project is a study, with colleagues, of ‘Making and Moving Consumables in Early Medieval Europe: From the Local to the Wider World’ bit.ly/4iJfnLN#Skystorians
New call for applications: RHS Workshop Grants, 2027, supporting day meetings of historians to plan and pursue a project bit.ly/48hkJrD
The Society now invites applications for 6 Workshop Grants of £1000 each to support group activities and networking.
Closing date: 15 January 2027 #Skystorians

Joe was a member of the @rmtunion.bsky.social - potentially one of their first workers of colour, joining in 1904, via its #Paddington branch.
Joe worked maintaining the mainline tracks near #London Paddington, as part of a gang of 8 men.

This blog was possible with the help of the excellent MuseumAnd: huge thanks to them!
We hope this is the start of a bigger #RailwayHistory#BlackHistory collaboration: more in due course!

For now, read more about Joe Armley here: www.railwayaccidents.port.ac.uk/black-histor...
PHP issue resolved!
With typical bad-timing, the Railway Work, Life & Death project website disappeared right when we were hoping to share it with people (for an event on Friday).
But we're back now ... and there's more coming soon! 😀
Massive thanks to University of Portsmouth technical support!
Kudos to UCU for securing a Westminster Hall debate on Higher Education funding, led by Sheffield Central MP Abtisam Mohamed, on the morning of the budget announcement.
It's 28 October 9:30-11:00am.
Apropos of current university redundancies and current interest in preserving freedom of speech at universities, it's worth asking whether staff at any English universities who are being made "voluntarily" redundant are also being required to sign non-disclosure agreements.

Judging by the messages I received last night, it looks like Rose Ayling-Ellis's episode of Who Do You Think You Are? aired on repeat last night!
Why message me?
Well ... spoiler alert: it might have had a railway worker accident aspect.
More here!
