FYI, the previous OPi and OPs is based on the older pulse phase modulation (PPM) method for signal transmission. Binary phase shift key (BPSK) is the "newer" method that the manufacturers and community broadly seem to agree will become the new standard for all underwater #acoustictelemetry.

At the manufacturer forum, Innovasea claimed to be supporting Open Protocol (OP) tags... However, when Kim Aarestrup specifically asked about the newer OP BPSK protocol, innovasea responded with: "We have not seen the spec of the BPSK [open protocol] yet, so cannot comment if we will support it."

They further claimed the Memorandum Of Understanding (required to view and use the new OP) violated EU laws, and hence they could not sign it to review the protocol. ...however, other manufacturers have already signed the MOU and are in the process of implementing the new OP BPSK protocol.

Eneko Aspillaga presented their work on getting 1D movement data from detections on single receivers. For tags with suitable random, discrete emission intervals, this allows for movement analysis on sparse telemetry arrays (i.e. without 2D or 3D fine scale positioning).

It’s hard to imagine that this stunningly beautiful larval-stage cardinalfish will metamorphose into one of the most average, common, and most overlooked fish of Bali’s reefs. In other locations, this would be a once-in-a-lifetime prize find on any blackwater dive, but here in Bali, it’s common-ish

“Perhaps the most relevant issue is that by releasing this trove of material in this manner, the companies are in the process of destroying the ecosystem that made it possible for this work,” she said." To me, this is the crux. Science is a human, community endeavor. They are destroying science.

Preprint: This short paper is my take on how to calculate/report absolute measures of time-difference-of-arrival positioning in #acoustictelemetry setups. Beyond reporting, these error measures can be passed to statespace models (like CTCRW) for very accurate post-processing estimates.

Any one know what this is? For two recent pre-prints, I've gotten AI agents posing as "science journalists" emailing me for media requests. I'm wondering what the hustle is here.... Both times, the agent identified itself as "Conor Watkins" from "Primary News". #OpenScience #SciComm

Its obviously AI, as both pre-prints are on ridiculously niche topics that I struggle to get others in my field interested in 🤣 and I got this messages within a day after the pre-prints went up. Also, there is an AI company called Primary that seems to deal in AI generated news 🙄.

An extended Kalman filter for large-volume path positioning of aquatic animals within acoustic telemetry arrays

James A Campbell@rtbecard.bsky.social

New preprint out: I use an extended Kalman filter for #acoustictelemetry positioning. It solves positions more-less instantly while applying a CTCRW movement model. It works great on datasets that don't have huge outliers (due to horizontal reflections).

A population Monte Carlo model for underwater acoustic telemetry positioning in reflective environments

As GOP postures against data centers, here’s what their moneyman Elon Musk just demanded at G20 on data centers: “It is pretty straightforward, you have to have an environment that is relatively free of regulation. New things must be default legal instead of default illegal.”

Has anyone been getting media requests from suspected AI agents for their papers? I published an *extremely* niche preprint... and my supervisor immediately got a media request email from a "journalist" from "Primary News". #SciComm #scisky

I suspect they are an AI agent scanning preprint repositories (I published on BioRxiv), then posing as journalists to make AI generated scientific news articles. The company "Primary" is an AI news organization founded by tech bro's as far as I can find.

I absolutely do not believe a human science journalist would be interested in my paper on: "Absolute measures of time-difference-of-arrival positioning error in underwater acoustic telemetry setups".🤣

"Proceeding of the Royal society" is now officially on my list of absolutely shit journals... They published the worst paper I have every peer reviewed (and the worst piece of scientific writing I have ever read, by far).

To sum it up... the peer preview process for this paper was a single anonymous peer reviewer who explicitly wrote in their review that they could not read/understand the research presented in the article. This is really not okay...

This fucking paper even made it to the journals cover!? Please stop allowing anonymous peer review... There needs to be some level of accountability on how absolute shit gets through the peer review system.

"Proceeding of the Royal society" is now officially on my list of absolutely shit journals... They published the worst paper I have every peer reviewed (and the worst piece of scientific writing I have ever read, by far).

It was submitted to Nature sci. reports and rejected (rightly so), then accepted this year to Proc. Royal Soc. There was just one peer reviewer who opened with: "I apologise that I cannot review the main academic portion of this manuscript - the maths and physics is too far out of my field."

What is the preferred (not latex or cloud-based) document format for collaboratively writing manuscripts across linux/windows/macOS? Specifically for equation compatibility. I'm using onlyoffice to write docx right now... seems to work... but I'm not sure how much I can trust it 🤔

Are there examples of concise statements that people put in acknowledgments sections to make clear to readers that absolutely no AI was used in any part of their paper? #Academiclife

I'm starting to get worried that younger students reading papers will just assume that *everything* was made with some degree with AI assistance... so I'd like to explicitly state in my works that I don't mess with that.

I wrote up my solution for figure scaling in rmarkdown. `fig.width` and `fig.height` set the output size and the new `scale` parameter scales the figure contents. Paste the code for the option hook in the first chunk, and the scale parameter will be available in all the following chunks. #rstats

Dear #rstats, is there a repository that shows the build scripts for all the libraries bundled in RTools distributions? I had an especially awful time trying to link to RTools' libsndfile (I gave up and compiled my own). Would be helpful if I could see how these libraries are configured.
