#Impeachment2025 #NoKingsNow our only response. If we don't use the constitution's tool for preventing executive overreach, we will lose the ability to do so before the midterms can possibly save us. WYR convince 16 GOP senators to elevate JD, or fight a civil war against the largest ever military?

I’ve got some answers on there already, but mostly along the lines of “lol noob, if you don’t like it, leave!” 😅 Would appreciate answers and/or vague-pointers-to-answers on here or there, if any of you have any! (Also, obligatory “Python rocks, regardless” 😊)

Why is analytic philosophy so "boring" compared to continental philosophy? You know what I mean. Are there any controversial analytical philosphers out there with some kind of really provoactive"vibe"? You know what I mean. #philsky

Fascinating+infuriating example of what a lack of #PhilSci can do to someone, centered on: > The notion that drug addiction is a brain disease... encapsulates all that’s wrong with today’s science in this area. There is absolutely no data in humans to show that drug addiction is a brain disease.

Carl Hart is a neuroscientist and at Columbia University who studies behavioral and neuropharmacological effects of drugs in humans. "I am now entering my fifth year as a regular heroin user,” he writes. “I do not have a drug-use problem. Never have." 🧪

I guess it shouldn't exactly be /shocking/ that an empirical scientist was never taught what a disease is (hint: it's not something you can "show" w/ data!), but it's certainly shocking that professional editors let him muse about it nonetheless. A rare example of an article that will kill people.

> While she regularly talks to Trump by phone, ??? Imagining those regular conversations boggles the mind with disgust and horror. Charitably, maybe they’re just being racist together for a bit? Is that something intentional racists do for fun?

I think focusing on current law versus current policy is getting it wrong. The key takeaway is Republicans are breaking the rules of the Senate so they can pass giant tax cuts for the rich while taking away health care from the sick and food from the needy. www.americanprogress.org/article/sena...

> US stocks cratered on Friday... after China stoked trade-war fears and... Powell warned of higher inflation and slower growth stemming from tariffs. Thanks Yahoo!. I guess it really is China's fault for responding predictably, and Powell for vaguely musing about obvious truths!

Liberal democracy is good for business. If we were still a liberal democracy, Congress would not be beholden to a Mad King and have shut down this trade war nonsense before it got off the ground. We won't fix our economic problems until we address our democracy problems 1/x

New definition of womanhood just dropped x is a woman iff: 1. x can have a baby (under certain circumstances). 2. x has a quality. 3. x is much smarter than a man. 4. x doesn’t even give a man a chance at success. 5. x has, in many cases, been treated very badly.

Wow TIL William James was *super* wrong about “Great Man” history, with a decidedly eugenicist tint to it at that. Anyone on #PhilSky know enough to defend where he was coming from w/ this argument? I kinda loved him as one of the creators of psychology, but never read this piece…

I feel like this should be the headline for every news org that doesn’t want to get into the details for some reason: by the whitehouse’s own calculations, prices on imported goods are about to go up by HALF

Hope is critical, y'all. We can still do this -- our descendants (and global peers) will never forgive us if we don't!

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

I strongly believe that the Turing test was intended as a philosophical argument instead of a technical benchmark, but regardless: this result is fucking bonkers. God, I hate when my post-2023 #AI predictions come true… If anyone on #PhilSky hasn’t read Turing 1950 yet, I highly recommend a skim:

A) very cool paper, as the main graphic shows already! Need to read in more depth, but seems novel for the field. B) I’d consider this a rallying cry for #PhilSky! We have millennia of conceptual tools, and yet our technical brethren are languishing, forced to make up words like “thoughtology” 🥺

Models like DeepSeek-R1 🐋 mark a fundamental shift in how LLMs approach complex problems. In our preprint on R1 Thoughtology, we study R1’s reasoning chains across a variety of tasks; investigating its capabilities, limitations, and behaviour. 🔗: mcgill-nlp.github.io/thoughtology/

This is… artificial phenomenology, I think? Also reminds me of how Chomsky talks about cognitive “interfaces” and “systems”, tho obv this is on a much higher level of abstraction

Talk about ending last night on a powerful note: > So tonight, it is not normal. I ask everybody to understand this is not a normal moment in America. This is a crossroads moment in America. It is one of those times where the values that we talk about in the Constitution are at stake.
