Flav going so hard for women’s sports is a highlight of the last couple of years. He’s found the golden ticket: invest in women, show up for them, praise their skills not their looks, and they will absolutely escort you round Vegas, king.

I’ve done my part 🫡

We’d love your help in filling out the Design Effectiveness survey. If you’re a designer or design-adjacent (researcher, developer, product owner, etc) or simply have opinions about design, then you’re welcome to join in. www.surveymonkey.com/r/RTTG77C We’ll share all our findings later this year.

Having had a break in the NaNoWriMo went weird years, I’m doing it again this year (and check out Nano2.org!). If anyone would like to be novel drafting buddies in November, hi hi hi! If you’ve never done NaNo but would like to, this us the perfect time to plan a scanty outline and dive in Nov 1!

ok non-tech ppl might be hearing some scary things about "critical vulnerabilities" involving certificates. the main thing you need to know, without getting down in the weeds about it, is that the fourth seal is broken. lo, a rider approacheth upon a pale steed, and his name is Death

Today I had a migraine and when I finally didn’t have a migraine, I made a cuddly yeti, with wonky horns. It is very imperfect but it was nice to do something that wasnt computer.

On this day in 2022, a fat faced tabby was caught in a trap. Scared, hungry, and sick with pneumonia, he spent some time in the ICU. The rest is history, but I like to consider today, his shelter intake date, Fishtopher's "birthday."

I have played through Dietrich and his girlypops, Cai, Cai’s girlfriend and Cai’s girlfriend’s boyfriend, and I’m halfway through Leda and her thirsty weirdos. Every route is weirder than the last and so I fully look forward to ‘Dora and the men tempted to read being fully unhinged. #FortunesWeave

I admired Margaret Hamilton so much as a young girl when I first learned about her in an Usborne book. I think I even traced this iconic image.

kottke.org@kottke.org

“Margaret Hamilton, who led the 100-person team that wrote the onboard software for the Apollo missions, guiding Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to a safe landing on the moon, died Sept. 30 in Cambridge, Mass. She was 90.” [nytimes.com]

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the most stereotypically Tory conservative man of the 21st Century, responded to Suella Braverman with a long-form video criticizing her position and rejecting a race-based theory of Englishness, and in response has been ratioed by the increasingly feral British online far-right.

I am playing Dietrich’s route in Fire Emblem, and his whole party is just people who are thirsty for him despite his autistic special interest being murdering peasants. 10/10 GOTY so far.

I think I mentioned it here before but Sei Shonagon’s The Pillow Book, completed in 1002. Bitingly funny depiction of the sophisticated Heien court, and utterly unbelievable in comparison to the works of contemporaneous Anglo-Saxon England.

Spinning out of the HHG conversation, a prompt! What is the oldest piece of media that you find intentionally very funny?

The RNLI’s online shop has some great options for Christmas gifts. I got my mum a welly boot planter and I bought myself a rad tshirt with their original appeal artwork. But there’s loads of stuff that doesn’t say RNLI, so you can support them via your obligatory gift to Racist Uncle Mike too.

As I keep pointing out, does no one understand Ricardian comparative advantage anymore. FACT: China produces over 1 million engineering graduates per year FACT: To date, China has not produced a single internationally marketable game show format Where does it look like our advantage lies?

A cheery message from the new minister responsible for research funding for the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences (and the subjects that the majority of UK taught undergraduate and Masters students study).

There was a moment in Big Walk where I watched my husband, through a telescope, collect one of the red puzzle pieces. I knew he thought he was putting it above his head and instead I watch as he wound his leg up real slow and absolutely wanged it into the dense bush below. I _cried_laughing.

Riley MacLeod@rcmacleod.bsky.social

In real life I consider myself a pretty smart, prudent person--but I am a disaster in Big Walk, running off from the group and losing my items and constantly forgetting where we are. But it's these moments--and the fact that you aren't in them alone-- that have made the game fun so far.

People often assume a product or service has malicious intent, but it’s really because of two PMs who don’t talk because then they’d have to admit the existence of the other and adjust their metrics.

I am reupping this for the late crowd, purely because I don’t post very often. octopus.horse is my new site to post more words than on bluesky

I’m currently laying on my side recovering from a sports-pastry injury, and so I have spent the time musing on speedrunning and book reading, and what gets admiration: octopus.horse/speedrunning... (pls humour me, I so very rarely write anything for myself these days)

Been in Denmark 6 days. Eaten 13 pastries. A respectable number hampered only by an injury sustained while walking to the furthest bakery on my map, which meant I had to abandon that . Juno and Enghave Kaffe, I’ll be back for you.

‘You are technically correct, the best kind of correct.’ I also get a surprising amount of mileage from ‘I’ll start my own (thing). With blackjack and hookers!’
