I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

I was on 1A this morning on third country deportations. Points: They are cruel, coercive, unnecessary, undermine due process, undermine refugee & torture conventions, disconnect foreign policy from support for human rights and democracy, use tax dollars to separate families & send refugees to harm.

Pierre Damas Bel. A 20-year-old Haitian immigrant with ambitions of practicing medicine, playing soccer, & building a life for himself. When his TPS was stripped from him, the weight of his uncertain future was too much to bear. He tragically took his life on August 31st.

When we say destructive policies put our communities at risk, this is what we mean. Pierre's death is an indictment of this administration's cruelty & inhumanity. We extend our condolences to his family, and stand in solidarity with all immigrants & refugees.

Maybe don’t send people to a city overwhelmed by internally displaced people and who don’t have any place familiar or safe to go. The Trump administration doesn’t care. It will uproot pastors and home health aides and children born here and deport them. edition.cnn.com/2026/08/21/a...

The pattern @almadavid.bsky.social, @humanrightsfirst.org & @refugeesinternational.org have documented with @aclu.org @immigrantjustice.bsky.social in one man's story. Roberto Mosquera. Held over a year in a maximum-security prison in Eswatini. No charge. No way out. Every defender should read this.

New from NYT Magazine. Roberto Mosquera came to the U.S. from Cuba at 12 in the 1980 Mariel boatlift. He served his time for an old crime. Now he sits in a maximum-security prison in Eswatini, a country he had never heard of, with no charge and no way out. 🧵
