On Disability Pride Month please take steps to reduce the stigma of disability by making an effort to change ableist attitudes This meme hit me hard. I was born with my disabilities and forced by people around me to be ashamed of my perceived weakness.

I can’t believe I just heard the current chair of the Davidson County Board of Commissioners ask the county attorney if she was accountable to answering to the public Yes, Mrs Watford. That is the very definition of your job. #votethemout #theircrimeonourdime

It’s too late to request a vote by mail ballot if you haven’t yet. But you can always vote Curbside in North Carolina if you’re elderly or a person with disabilities. If you run into any issues please call 833-VOTE4NC 833-868-3462 #gotv #ncpol #ncdp #CripTheVote

I’m a fan of Lawrence O’Donnell on MS Now but I have to say that I was taken aback at his shaky performance at the start of his interview with Iowa’s next Senator Josh Turek. Lawrence was visibly uncomfortable talking about Josh being a person with disabilities and wheelchair user.

Parents transmit unspoken information about interacting with persons with disabilities. This mom did it right! I thanked her for it. Ugly laws were on the books in places in the US until the 70’s. It was illegal to be visibly disabled in public. We can’t go back!

We have a saying, Nothing About Us Without Us. That needs to be understood that extends to the entire population. We are active participants in life like you. We just might have to go through it differently… but then again… everyone does! Embrace our differences. It’s what makes life interesting!

Last weekend I was at a store. I was in my power wheelchair. A mother with two young daughters was in my section. One of the girls who appeared to be about 8 or 9 was mesmerized by my chair. I could see that she was super interested in it in a positive light.

I told her about how much I love my chair and that I named it. Her sister who appeared to be about 6 was eager to join in the conversation. The mother didn’t look uncomfortable, bristle, or try to shoo them away.

Part of why Disability Pride Month is important is to have conversations about disability. To remove the mystery or stigma. I may sound like I am bashing Mr O’Donnell but far from it. If someone whom I admire as a broadcaster is having a hard time, then many others do too.

Ableism is a thing. Internalized ableism is easily the most damaging. It takes great courage to accept one’s disabilities and ask for support. Please listen to the people in your life and your community. Understand that your world is not hospitable to people like me.

Oh! Don’t pity us! Change the system! Remove the stigma. Make the world accessible for everyone! Disability Pride Month is when we celebrate our unique experience and raise awareness about our community and our struggles.

I felt guilt when my mind or body didn’t act like the non-disabled people around me. I struggled with life on hard mode. I raised 4 daughters who are raising their own children and living their authentic lives. I did this without the privilege of having a body and mind that didn’t require support.

It wasn’t until my needs were so high that I finally quit beating myself up for being weak and substandard. There is little that can be done about a mind and body trying to succeed in a world that was not designed with me in mind.

I try to be positive with my messaging because demoralizing us is a tool of authoritarianism. But I have to admit that it is becoming more and more like diving into the pit of despair to find the best turds to polish. Do not obey in advance!

The American gestapo abducted an 85 year-old widow. Was she one of the worst of the worst? No, her step-son, a retired Alabama state trooper, got ICE to put her in a detention center to deport her because he wanted all of his father's inheritance. Sounds like the son is the worst of the worst.

My favorite Schadenfreude story from NC Primary Phil Berger who is the State Senate Leader and had tons of Trump money backing him … Will now have to spend more of that money to try to save this seat. Two votes, y’all!!

When a Governor is not worried about being re-elected he/she can get some serious work done. I have to wonder, as a neurospicy person, how much of this decision is about protecting his wonderful son. If you think this is not a reality for families and PWD, you are not paying attention! #disability

Many of my friends like to share where they were when the towers fell. We were victims of a senseless attack on that day. 5 years ago our entire country was a victim of another attack and the call quite literally came from within the house… you know which house.

Word started coming into our space about what was happening. The volunteers who entered that shift were all shell shocked and stunned. I jumped in and said this is exactly why we do the work we do. We are protecting the voices of Americans!

That work continues to be taken on by average citizens. Let me know if you want to be a Vote Protector or help organize for non-Trumpy candidates. You can do this work from your home. You decide how much time you want to spend on the tasks.

I will never forget what I was doing: I was part of the team leading phone banks curing ballots for Georgia. We had been doing this work since late November. Team Relentless is what we called ourselves. We had been at it all day. We had a brief chance to catch our breath between shifts.
