We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to study DNA damage repair via the homologous recombination pathway using quantitative cell biology approaches. The position will be initially supported for two years by the MSU Research Foundation Postdoctoral Scholars program. Please share! 1/5

Happy to share that I will be joining the Biology Department and Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Iowa as an assistant professor in summer 2027! My lab will study how recombination is regulated to prevent non-allelic repair and genome rearrangements, and their relation to cancer.

Carolyn started this as a whole-genome revisit of the classic 1996 papers on spontaneous nondisjunction from Hawley (Dros X) and Sherman (human 21) labs. She looked at a metacentric (Dros 2) and found that the rules are different - no obvious relationship between ndj and crossovers. Shape matters!

Carolyn Turcotte and @jeffsekelsky.bsky.social employed whole-genome sequencing to study spontaneous meiotic nondisjunction of the metacentric chromosome 2 in #Drosophila, identifying chromosome-specific mechanisms of meiotic nondisjunction. 🪰 Learn more in #GENETICS: 🔗 buff.ly/LmC3qZU

Happy to share our collaborative project with Stephane Marcand, on the protective role of Rap1 at telomeres. It turned out that our favorite protein, MRX, has the ability to measure telomere length, and activate response pathways when telomeres become too short. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Pleased to share our paper. We found surprising widespread glycogen accumulation in A-T due to mitochondrial impairment that can be improved by targeting the unexpected FNIP2-SERCA2b-axis. #AtaxiaTelangiectasia #ATM #RareDisease #Metabolism #Mitochondria www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Just in time for my grad school lecture on NER!

Our great collaboration with the lab of Wei Yang and Kaoru Sugasawa is now online in Nature. We’re glad we could contribute some cell biology to complement this beautiful structural and biochemical work. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Great conference!!

📣 The 2026 Midwest DNA Repair Symposium is coming to Kansas City (registration is open) 🗓 May 30–31, 2026 ✨ Talks will be selected from abstracts, with a strong focus on trainees and new investigators. Please RT & share with your labs! 🔗 sites.google.com/view/kumc-mi...

RNAseH2 is super picky...which is not always a good thing?

🎉Kicking off 2026 with our first paper from the Freudenthal lab in NAR. Ribonucleotides reshape telomeric G4s and are resistant to RNase H2 repair. Congrats to the authors and huge thanks to our collaborator Hui-Ting Lee! academic.oup.com/nar/article/...

Very cool!

Excited to share our new Nature study! 🧬 We (sidrituruci.bsky.social et al) discovered that CFAP20 helps clear stalled RNAPII, preventing harmful clashes with DNA replication machinery. This protects cells from R-loops and genome instability. Full paper: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Great piece of work - congratulations, all!

Alberto Marin@albertomarin.bsky.social

Thrilled to share that my postdoc research is published today in @science.org! We found that DNA repair uses cohesin complexes to build new chromatin loops that guide the homology search and boost accurate repair! 1/n www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

So cool. And hey, its a good thing NHEJ doesnt slow down when you get sleepy.

See our paper “Mechanism of trinucleotide repeat expansion by MutSβ-MutLγ and contraction by FAN1”. Using biochemistry, we show how DNA incisions by the MutLγ nuclease can lead to expansions, and how expansion is prevented by FAN1. Well done Issam and Valentina! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
