qntm discusses revisiting the Antimemetics Division, the influence of programming on his fiction, hostile systems, scientific realism, information scarcity, and why imagining a genuinely good future may be more difficult than imagining the end of the world. Read the interview below!

Today, in DD/MM/YY form, is 24/10/26, a Pythagorean triple, the last one this century apparently

Full list of 28 such dates fits in a post: 05/04/03 04/05/03 05/03/04 03/05/04 04/03/05 03/04/05 13/12/05 10/08/06 08/10/06 10/06/08 06/10/08 15/12/09 08/06/10 06/08/10 13/05/12 15/09/12 12/05/13 05/12/13 17/08/15 12/09/15 09/12/15 20/12/16 15/08/17 16/12/20 25/07/24 26/10/24 24/07/25 24/10/26

Most people do not notice that sometimes, instead of losing a single sock in the laundry, they get an extra one back

When this happens it is important that you do not wear the extra sock, do not pair it up with anything, do not keep it with other socks and definitely do not launder it again

I know the fashionable thing right now is to dunk on Google for stupid AI answers but I'm still hung up on how when I ask it for a totally elementary length conversion in feet and inches it gives me feet but not inches

Bulletins A, B and D track and forecast the discrepancy. A leap hour - if that even is what eventually happens - isn't going to happen for the next "several centuries" (would be curious to know the actual timeframe)

Ben Keith 🎃@benlk.com

Might it continue as a tracker of the discrepancy, and forecast of the likelihood of a leap hour?

The abolition of the leap second also means that no one will ever use Google's proposed 24-hour smear to handle one

But what will become of IERS Bulletin C, in which leap seconds (or the lack thereof) are announced every six months?

There's a Star Wars character, Ben Quadinaros, who drives a podracer with four engines Is he called "Quad-" because of his four engines, or was he inspired to use four engines because of his name, or is it a coincidence OR:

OR, in the Star Wars universe, does "quad-" mean "four" not due to Latin but because of Ben Quadinaros' famous four-engined racer

My finest ever work. I wrote it on a treadmill in a gym, recording each title, as I thought of them, into the notes app.

I'll be on a panel discussion at MCM Comic Con London on Sunday 25th October. Panel is at 1pm on the Writers Block stage. Should be good, plus if you want something signed by me this would be a good opportunity to do that!

mcmcomiccon.comPanel Information

From personal experience the Writers Block stage can be hard to find, it's in the back corner on the top floor of the Excel centre. Maybe give yourself a little time to find it

AI-generated spam/scam emails have been getting increasingly polished of late. If you want to send me a legitimate email, please do whatever is necessary to make it clear that your email was written by you, an authentic, creative, physical human being (Interpret this however you please)

By the way, I personally have been receiving dozens and dozens of this kind of spam email now. I hope it's costing whoever sends them a lot of money

Some scams are easier to spot than others. That said, we get these semi-regularly and they are only getting more focused and custom-tailored, so be careful writers! And, no, we didn’t reply, but it was super-tempting.

If I give an AI agent the power to check me into a flight then surely I'm also giving it the power to add baggage, remove baggage, change my seat to better or worse locations, etc. etc. and possibly even cancel my booking entirely I do not trust it to not do these things

Is he strong? Listen, bud— He's got radioactive blood Does that answer your question? Not really

Open question. Which science fiction author do we think was the richest/made the most money

This is one of the points I'm hinting at here. A lot of science fiction authors *should* have made bank but very definitely didn't. PKD another example

Starshark@starshark.bsky.social

Was Ray Bradbury rich? He should’ve been.

Conjecture: there's more money in fantasy or horror writing than there is in science fiction writing

Open question. Which science fiction author do we think was the richest/made the most money

Maybe to specify this a little better, who made the most money directly from writing science fiction books and short stories? Let's exclude unrelated book income, screenplays/film adaptations of their work Or, approximately equivalently, who sold the most science fiction books?

Discounting the wangles (Hubbard made a lot of money by unrelated means, Lucas was primarily a director, King primarily a horror writer), Crichton seems like the one. Jurassic Park was a legitimately successful book

I feel that quite a few time machines in fiction are coincidentally also teleporters and the teleportation angle goes somewhat unexamined

A lot of "What would you do if you had a time machine" is "What if you could perform an arbitrary act and then escape all of its consequences" and the fact that you escape to the future is kind of neither here nor there

"What if you could go back in time to France during the Revolution?" Okay so what if I could go back to modern Paris, 1 second ago? There's a proper business model

Imagine first gaining consciousness inside a sealed dark ovoid and being "well I guess I need to hack my way out of here if I want to exist"

Imagine a sealed ovoid full of liquid organic protein which, if kept warm for long enough, may become a bird

Imagine first gaining consciousness inside a sealed dark ovoid and being "well I guess I need to hack my way out of here if I want to exist"

This while also being utterly feeble, bald, pink, blind and helpless, but ALSO wanting it badly enough to make it happen
