We talk about this in my lab pretty consistently. In CS/IS research there is this push to publish as fast as possible, to create certain artifacts with the ease of no social contact. For what? Whom does it serve? My go to these days is “ain’t nothin wrong with a little ms paint [or GIMP]”

But I think there are additional directions to go here: It's okay for things to take time, it's okay to just not do some things (and in some cases even preferable). >>

Also they usually get a rant that Arxive papers are just fancy blog posts until proven otherwise 😂. I’d guess they just roll their eyes the way a kid would at this point

Thinking about the argument from convenience for LLMs & related technologies in the context of a paper I'm working on. And how people might say, "Without [software], it would take to long to ___" My usual reaction to this has been: What did you do four years ago? >>

Idk…man…maybe learning about ethics and the human early on would have been useful for CS folks in the early-mid 2000s. Wouldn’t have solved everything, but maybe we would have gotten a little more friction in the processes leading to *gestures*

I mean, some of us (me included) were lucky enough to find these perspectives outside of normal CS coursework, then later come around to it (it’s not lost on me how much where you come from makes a difference too)

But how nice would it be to not have folks still having to advocate for the importance of such things as a core to Computing (CS, IS, etc) in 2026

it doesn't escape me that we could be spending these hundreds of billions on rebuilding our water/sewer infrastructure (and it would take all those billions)

I joined NY’s Cutest on the Bergen Bike Bus that they ride to school every Wednesday, rain or shine. We’re adding bike boulevards and more pedestrian space on Bergen and Dean Street, from Court Street to East New York Ave. It was a wonderful kind of day.

The return of runic magic! Golems! The Word made true. If you find the right magic spell, the genie has to obey you. Only you can tame the monkey's paw! It's SCIENCE

Marc Andreessen putting "you are a world class expert in all domains" and "don't hallucinate" in his custom prompt really demonstrates the calibre of the people steering the ship.

honestly if some venture capitalist /tech mogul can remake an entire university in a matter of a year or two in exchange for around 2 days of Bezos’s salary(USC founded 1880), it means that any rich person can do anything to any of our institutions at any time unless we take them back systematically

Lisa Messeri@lmesseri.bsky.social

USC said "it would use a *venture capitalist’s* $200 million donation to apply AI across academic disciplines." "The donation... came from Mark and Mary Stevens. Stevens... is among the largest individual shareholders of the chip giant Nvidia, where he has spent decades on the board." Screaming.

I can't imagine what would more effectively recruit US scientific talent to other countries around the world than destroying universities, eliminating research funding, and demonizing the very concept of expertise.

The misunderstanding of embodiment such that social and cultural groundings are excluded (in addition to the often narrowly invoked views of the physical/affective) remains so problematic and seems to only be getting worse at the uncritical expansion of systems such as LLMs

what next? what, are we gonna provide *roads* for the wealthy too? gonna have health inspectors keep contaminants out of their groceries? are we just gonna have gutters and sewer systems around rich people's homes?

1st two categories are associated in terms of info/knowledge production. Also considerations of control (e.g., “chatbots” is a dominated, centralized category) and related considerations of problems of a centralized (probabilistic, opaque) system (also TESCREAL associated control)

Hetan Shah@hetanshah.bsky.social

Here’s a bit of analysis from @jburnmurdoch.ft.com showing chatbots are less likely to serve up misinformation than social media. So if this is how people are going to start consuming information it may be a moderating force towards factualness. Who thought that LLMs might be a force for truth?!

it's incredible that as long as you do the right amount of bigotry you can just rob the country blind and enough people will not care, even though those same people will be filled with incandescent rage if someone uses food stamps to buy a 12 pack of diet coke

TRUMP: I did a mail in ballot for elections in Florida because I felt I should be here REPORTER: You were in Palm Beach the last few weekends TRUMP: Yeah. And I decided that I was going to vote by mail in ballot because I had a lot of different things

Reading a Black Geographies convo and confronted with this reminder from McKittrick. “Part of what I am sharing here is animated by premature death and scholars of color in the academy doing a lot of heavy lifting and wearing out.” Which reminded me of a similar convo Bell Hooks had with Stuart Hall
