El-Sayed on Vance: Is that Peter Thiel's boy with that Ohio charisma? The last thing that he said that made any sense was Hillbilly Elegy—after he said that Donald Trump had no business being president of anything. And then he decided to suck up to power.

I think this is a really important op-ed from the Mellon Foundation today, doubling down on their philanthropic commitment to humanities research and encouraging universities and other foundations to do the same. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

I also really appreciate that Phil Harper who directs Higher Learning funding at Mellon is explicit about their support of Indigenous Studies, Black Studies and Gender Studies. And the framing of these fields (rightly) as scholarly. This is a stark difference from the conservative approach of others

Mellon is out here keeping humanities in universities afloat which is absurd on so many levels. But I am thankful for the way they support my work and some of the coolest projects Black scholars are doing across the country. Wrap them in bubble wrap. And read this if you need fortification.

It feels clear to me that there is very little understanding outside of academe of just how much humanities are under attack all over the country. But you cannot understand politics, war, ethics, or history without strong depts in universities in these fields.

Gender studies does a far better job of explaining the Trump administration than traditional political science, or economics for that matter

Thank god there are no gender studies classes anymore otherwise we might be able to figure out what's going on here.

Hegseth announced they're gonna start screening for T and administering testosterone treatment for warriors found wanting

The thing that gets on my nerves about Graham Platner is the way folks keep being shocked that racists are very often rapists and rapists are very often racists. See also SCOTUS. See also POTUS. Racism and patriarchy are intertwined bc they are both about dominance reinforced through violence.

Thank you @profcrunk.bsky.social for calling out the issue underlying the scourge of mass shootings in this country. Mental health is the easy answer, and it is obviously part of the problem, but the patriarchy rotting our society from the roots has to be addressed. www.thecut.com/article/shre...

"A rise in femicide is the predictable outcome in a country turning back the clock on women’s rights...These killings are the natural outcome of a country enamored with patriarchy, determined to make sure that men can dominate women." Thank you, @profcrunk.bsky.social www.thecut.com/article/shre...

The President of Rutgers continues to dismantle DEI despite the fact that we are a state school and the voters of New Jersey roundly rejected all things Trump last November. It is infuriating. He and the entire leadership team at Rutgers are all Black people btw.

I have taken up quilting. Unfortunately that puts you in proximity to sympathizers. Just this morning I told somebody “the confederacy lost,” not knowing i was right on time. As I usually am. Happy Happy indeed!

Happy Appomattox Day to all that celebrate

Domination is the only thing that gives emotional meaning to having all that power. They have more money than can be spent in a million lifetimes, but money can’t buy happiness. It can buy the power to induce collective misery, which will feel something when too much money still feels like nothing.

I think it's best for everyone to understand that the unified class project of billionaires right now is to do to white collar workers what globalization and neoliberalism did to blue collar workers.

They have to externalize the emptiness. They have to make all that inequality visible in order for them to *feel* as powerful as their money says they are. They have to dominate everyone and everything in order to feel like the gods they believe they should be. Newsflash: it still won’t be enough.

It’s like how half of the hustle of flying first class is that other people can’t do it. The seats are better but they aren’t that great for the level of money being paid. Airlines play on folks need to feel distinctive and different even if the inducements are costly and paltry.

It feels worth saying that the thing that unifies men as disparate as Noam Chomsky, Deepak Chopra and Trump is patriarchy. Patriarchy, hatred of women, and the need to dominate them, persists across race and class status. Left movements refuse a robust analysis of persisting gender violence.

FYI: In 1916 the U.S. signed an agreement for control of St. Thomas, St. John & St. Croix, known as the “Danish West Indies,” in exchange for $25 million & a declaration that the U.S. would “not object to the Danish Govt extending their political & economic interests to the whole of Greenland.

The whole point of being an academic is that you need to be willing to spend three days creating a 700-word footnote that you will later delete. And you need to LIKE IT.

% Black tenure-track faculty doesn't increase--it declines between 2004 and 2024! The Compact piece uses various subsets to highlight the small amounts of diversification in humanities & some social science. That's fine, but worth taking a step back to the complete data

Among the things I am thinking abt is how the left fared after Breitbart died, and after Scalia died. And wondering how things will go this time. And now going back to my fiber crafts and gardening. (I finally have some tomatoes.)

OK Y’all. 2 yrs ago I uploaded a pdf to Notebook LM, a Google AI that could convert pdfs into notes. Today I learned it has an audio feature where it will generate a “podcast” of two people talking about the article. I am now listening to a “podcast” abt the article I uploaded in 2yrs ago. WILD!

I mean what I want is for every person mad about the trip to go in search of 11 minutes of spaced out bliss this week, through whatever vehicle of your choosing. That feels like the proper balance to the foolishness.

Part of the thing that is so boring about social critique right now is that folks let the need for righteousness skip them right past the actual joke that says it all. Hyperseriousness is the opposite of the cure for the unseriousness of these times.

Even though I know all the writerly nerdy folks are on these very apps chasing the feeling of the late aughts and early 2010s, some of our performance of social critique has not at all caught up to this decade and it shows.

Form Wendy Brown’s “Resisting Left Melancholy”: “But left melancholy is Benjamin's unambivalent epithet for the revolutionary hack who is…attached more to a particular political analysis or ideal-even to the failure of that ideal-than to seizing possibilities for radical change in the present.”

Really jarring reading this piece at The Guardian abt the ICE Detention Center in Jena Louisiana where Mahmoud Khalil is being held, and thinking abt my genesis as an activist 18 years ago in Jena, when my fellow PhD students and I chaperoned a bus of Emory undergrads to the Jena 6 protests.
