I’ve been having a pretty rough couple of weeks, but these things have cheered me up a lot today so far: - Speaking Portuguese to various people successfully - Watering the plants in my designated campus planter - Having students laugh at my silly jokes in my slides and ask insightful questions

Check out this commentary recently published in AMPPS (journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...), a discussion of the findings in Grassi et al related to musical training short-term memory. The interesting part: It's written BY THE AUTHORS, with differing views on the same set of results. Luv this one.

Some days I think about how we’ve been carefully developing and validating metacheck for two years now, with limited and always-optional local LLM use, and worry it’s just going to be lumped in with quickly vibe-coded AI agents.

A really interesting thread. I usually find myself leaning closer towards an "abolish journals" stance, but I found this perspective very interesting...

Tom Hostler@tomhostler.bsky.social

My unpopular science reform opinion is that journal name/reputation SHOULD be a good heuristic for trust/quality, and that’s what we should be trying to achieve.
