For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.
“Billionaires who popularized stock-based lending include Larry Ellison and Elon Musk. Both borrow to avoid having to sell shares—which could trigger a taxes and dilute their voting rights—in companies they founded.”

pink muhly grass absolutely throwing ass today. how do you pronounce muhly? i don’t know. im not going to read your comments if you tell me, im going to wait for it to come up in a real person conversation and just give it a shot. the risk of embarrassment is what gives life its spark
There comes a time in every reactionary politician's life when he must steel himself, insert a nasogastric tube for unclear reasons, put on his bravest grimace, and give the weirdest thumbs-up anyone has ever seen.
Yeah, this is really bad. It's good that El-Sayed distanced himself from it, but I am in awe at how Cenk's left-wing PAC managed to combine antisemitism with transphobia and pitch it as *supporting* the Democrat in this race.
I read the NYT piece earlier, and I had no idea there was a new rape allegation against the president until I saw this thread.
The closest the Times got to saying there’s a new allegation was “it largely cites allegations that have already been public.”
The house I grew up in had a stairwell right in the middle. Everyone who lived there saw the same old man just...milling around. Only in the stairwell. More than once my friends mentioned in passing running into my "grandpa" on the stairs.
My son was suspended from school for giving another student a "pigjob" and now we're all sitting around the empty dinner table as a family with our palms flat on the surface staring at nothing in particular in silence. It is understood none of us will ever ask what the word means.
i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment
Kind of funny, in an Ancient Greek Hell kind of way, that this guy handed Trump the presidency in 2016, and as a reward Trump is kicking him in the teeth forever. www.nbcnews.com/politics/jus...
Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"
"Under Brazilian federal law, all legislators have immunity...To run for President, Bolsonaro decided not to run for his Senate seat. Now, after losing the Presidential election, he no longer has legislative immunity when his Senate term expires in January 2027."
Very Special Episode of no amnesty
Flávio Bolsonaro had his passport confiscated by the Brazilian fed police as his brother Eduardo told him to flee to the US.
He is tied to paramilitary gangs, is being investigated & lost his legislative immunity when he left the Senate to run for president.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

You know...I genuinely wonder if Trump's decline meaning that he sexually harasses men as well as women is going to shake loose any introspection. Probably not, but man...
Jesse Ventura has been wrong about a great many things but when he's in "I was in fucking Vietnam so who the hell are you to tell me about war" mode he is unbeatable.
Jesse Ventura to Piker: "Here's what pisses me off -- I did 2 tours, 17 months. So did my brother. Southeast Asia. That was at the same time Donald Trump was running and hiding like the coward he is. Why didn't he join us in the Vietnam War? I've heard him talk. He said he should be a general!"
“'You Can See Everything' is a hilarious, thrilling, fascinating, beautiful piece of art. What it certainly is not is a documentary, and it’s dangerous to pretend that it is,” writes Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz. https://bit.ly/4Bk2nDJ
Yeah. People seem under the impression that “documentary” means “journalism” which it emphatically does not. Try telling Werner Herzog he doesn’t meet your editorial standards lol. Or Errol Morris!
The last "good" pollster had the Montana Senate race at R+8. The other pollsters had it at R+15 or more. Even Bodnar's campaign-sponsored polls had the R ahead.
The internals must be truly apocalyptic if they're sending the couchfucker to rally the base?
Sure, man, you’ve got my number. I’m a moron. I’m a windup toy. I’m probably AI. What you’re feeling isn’t anxiety, it’s indignation. That rage is confidence, not insecurity. Very superior, very impressive. Good job, big dog.
yeah the 'let people enjoy things' argument you morons fall back on when you run out of words, like little wind up toys who don't know there's a history of aesthetics. so you're saying that CF is for those of refined taste who - *inclusive* of all classes - are, let me get this right, 'shameless'?
Skill issue. You're rambling about semiotics but you're just talking class. Your rant stinks of the kind of pedestrian tastes that only an overgrown and unobserved sense of shame can produce. Let these people enjoy their Cheesecake Factory in the peace without you jerking off your blues away.
the fake kitsch and gold leaf pomp is a whole other thing, but the semiotics are the same: this is trash for pigs, a treat for those with unrefined taste. it is engineered spectacle meant only to overwhelm your nervous system. sometimes the builders of these palaces are sneering at you, sometimes
Man, theres something to be said for a movie that just outright states the anxieties it's dealing with. Like the Italians had ZERO fear about saying the quiet parts out loud in the 70s and 80s.
Reading James Ellroy’s The Black Dalia and annoying my girlfriend by summarizing the first five or so chapters by loudly saying “Men. Strong men. Two strong men and they are punching. They are so strong these two men. Two men punching eachother out of respect. Strong men. Two strong men.”
It's insane that the campaign against El-Sayed is basically that he has some secret relationship with the people that the president's family has a secret relationship with.
In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.
