Going through old notes today, I was reminded that the NY Times' Peter Baker wrote in January that Trump had "changed the definition of normal." It helps us understand NYT's shortcomings when we realize it accepts the idea that Trump gets to decide what's normal.

This is a Pulitzer-worthy article.

NEW: Ingram, Texas, was just rebuilding from a devastating flood when its tiny police department enrolled in ICE’s 287(g) deportation program. Within a year, cops would hand over the equivalent of 10% of the town. with @nytimes.com

Gosh, anyone know anyone who voted to approve all of this?!?

Susan Collins: "I think what happened is far too many ICE officers were hired and deployed without adequate vetting and training"

I guess I’m firmly planted in my old man phase… but I’m just sooo tired of ball players acting like prima donnas. The bat flips, the taunts, the lack of respect has me constantly wishing the ‘respect your opponent mantra’ from the ‘80s still had more adherents.

great bit by major league baseball that the 19th, 24th, 28th, and 30th highest payroll teams are going to be four of the five squads still standing tomorrow, given that the whole sport will shut down for 2027 because owners have brainwashed everyone into believing teams like them don’t have a chance

JACKSON CHOURIO BREWERS LEAD #WINOURWAY

I hate when the season ends… I think the ultimate verdict on this team is disappointment with the primary culprit being injuries and the lack of quality (healthy) pitching.

A disappointing, underwhelming ending for the Cubs. Their season is over, getting swept in the Wild Card by the Padres with tonight's 4-1 loss in Game 2.

Ken Paxton: The criticism has been that I let a child predator out after one day. Well guess what? They served 60 days.

It’s been a helluva season. We won’t forget this one soon.

Here's the full video of PCA's 40th stolen base of 2026. A no doubter. This was for the Wrigley Field faithful. #GoCubsGo #Cubs #WrigleyField

As an American political historian, I can confirm that this Congress has been "almost unmatched in history" in several categories -- sad abdication of its war powers, craven surrender of the power of the purse, weird refusal to conduct meaningful oversight, and an utter failure to pass actual laws.

Mike Johnson claims that the current Congress is "probably in the top three or four of all time" and is "almost unmatched in history" 🙃

Wanted to wish Ryne Sandberg a happy heavenly birthday. Ryno was born #OTD in 1959. He would have turned 67. He is missed by #Cubs fans every day 🎥-Cubs Productions

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

Every time this comes up on the timeline, I watch it three times.

Every second that goes by this video gets crazier and crazier 😮 This Javier Báez play is still one of the wildest things we have ever seen on a baseball field

Burger King is running ads and the copy is basically this: If we screw up your order and you ask us to fix it and we don’t, then we’ll give you a free burger next time. Like, is that supposed to be good? Are you suggesting that outside of this promotion, you’re not going to fix screwed up orders?

Carson Kelly challenges a full count strike three with the bases loaded. The ball missed the zone by 1.5”. Carson takes his base, pushes in a run, and Michael Busch singles in two more runs. That was a three run delta due to Kelly’s challenge. #GoCubsGo

It’s been estimated Ka$h has fired or reassigned 25-45% of the FBI’s counter terrorism agents. Lil Billy Pulte purged about 30% of DNI staff in his short and vile stint. Bookmark this when our enemies exploit the opportunity (and they immediately try to blame Biden)

Just a solid game where the Cubs outplayed the O’s. Crowd was probably 25% Cubs fans in the first and 50% Cubs fans in the ninth.

#Cubs win! Cubs win! They beat the Orioles 5-2! Matthew Boyd had a quality start, pitching 6 shutout innings. Miguel Amaya was 2-3 and scored 3 runs, Alex Bregman was 2-5 with 2 RBI, Dansby Swanson was 2-4 with an RBI, and PCA 2-5 with an RBI! Fly the flag, sing the song!

So many people share responsibility for the situation we find ourselves in, but McConnell belongs high on the list of effective and terrible leaders in our history.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Don't want to speak ill of the dead, so getting this Mitch McConnell take out now. He saw Trump with complete clarity, as a danger to America, but protected him anyway. Perhaps more than anyone, he had the power to end Trumpism, but chose party over country. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/jan-6-and-...

How often do we see this type of framing, as if Cuban’s efforts solely generated the value of the company and the 300 employees are the beneficiaries of his largesse. This type of framing is the foundational paradigm that results in oligarchical rule and corruption. Labor & Capital are partners.

Pete and Bregman just consecutively took away two Phillies hits. Pete showing the range and Bregman positioned in the hole right where the ball was hit. #Cubs 10-1 and cruising tonight! Feels good!

CBS paid the president of the United States millions in bribe money and now they censor news reports so it does not annoy him. I don’t know how much plainer we can put this.

This is surreal. An IU Quarterback hoisting the Heisman.

In 2022, Fernando Mendoza was a two-star recruit from South Florida. He was ranked the No. 140 quarterback nationally by 247Sports. Now, the longest of long shots in Heisman history is part of the most exclusive club in college football.
