This isn't normal
"Itβs a very personal thing, and βnormalisingβ something that really shouldnβt be an every day or week thing isnβt helpful in my eyes. This isnβt normal. Being told to be grateful for a bag of veges that you have to throw out half of yourself isnβt NORMAL."

If I ever do anything in politics, my central platform will be βmake social services not suckβ. Wonβt even be aiming to make them brilliant. Just βnot shitβ.
1. Tax free threshold should be above the poverty line
2. "$1,000 annual boost for people on income support, including pensioners, carers, students, and job seekers." erm, think bigger, mate
#RaiseTheRate $1k cash now, welfare above the poverty line tomorrow?

Itβs no time for tinkering and trade-offs that will barely be noticeable to the people who need help the most β whether theyβre in a low-paid job, on Centrelink, or both.
Greens coming out with a policy that βincreasesβ JobSeeker less than what Morrison did in 2022 is not how you tackle poverty.
Happy CPI Day to those who celebrate. Lots of Estimates stuff today - both Treasury and the RBA. @amyremeikis.bsky.social and her underlings (ie me) will be on it at #PointLivelive.thepoint.com.au

wtf @davidshoebridge.bsky.social
"No matter who you are, whether you're working, studying, looking for work or on a pension, you'll get more,"
lol $21 a week is less than the rent goes up next month.
Welfare ABOVE the poverty line is meant to be greens policy? Are you a green?
1) does @davidshoebridge.bsky.social know what the JobSeeker rate is & how many 100s of dollars a week it is below the poverty line?
2) what's the point of the greens having a policy saying Centrelink payments should be above the poverty line if they start talking about increasing it by pennies?

turns out the huge increase in number and size of bigger cars correlates with more drivers killing people who are pedestrians and cyclists.

An immediate reaction is to say the Albanese government has learned nothing from #robodebt.
But perhaps they have learned only too well how to punch down on welfare recipients with onerous, cruel and illegal conditions. #poverty#inequality#RaiseTheRate#auspol
Why does the government insist on trying to recover blood from a stone?
If they want to aggressively recover so-called debts from people who've relied on Centrelink payments, they should at least wait until they can actually afford to live.
@kristin8x.antipovertycentre.org on the latest debt BS
Another tax proposal: the tax free threshold should be roughly equal to the full-time minimum wage. Pay for it by making companies pay more.
Workers pay a far higher rate of tax in proportion to their gross earnings than companies pay. This needs to be corrected.
it was so great to finally be working again, but whoops still in poverty and whoops here's a 415 dollar fee for tax despite you payiing out of pocket for work from home costs which the tax agent cant do as a deduction...
anyway now my braain's completely fucked and im in ultra-poverty again
""I kept ringing them and saying, 'I've got zero points, I've got no requirements. Why am I getting these suspensions?' But it just kept happening,"

Only the Greens will end support for this industry based on gambling-fuelled cruelty.

"AS always, they call for MORE food relief, to expand the footprint of βAustraliaβs third supermarketsβ β surely with so many people accessing Foodbank-supplied charities the reach of the purple supermarket is getting up there, especially when you add the fleet of yellow OzHarvest vans?"
The current withdrawal cap for hardship and compassionate release prior to preservation age is $10,000, which has remained unchanged since 1997. Stewart said this frozen cap should be reviewed, considering that, in line with inflation, it would sit at around $21,500 to $22,600 today.
Thatβs true, I donβt have faith in it either. Or in the entire possibility of retiring in any form. Itβs more the passing of responsibility as a concept that irritates me. Governments individualise so many systemic responsibilities.
