Of course, it remains to be seen how the Conservatives actually govern. But if it's in an uncompromisingly populist fashion, my prediction is that they will be here for neither a good time, nor a long time.

The sequence of events about this really is incredible. In an interview Kylian Mbappé was asked his thoughts about the "dictator" meme. He answered that he actually found them hilarious and took it in stride. He was then asked which one was his favourite, and he mentioned the one below.

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but Chairman Mao was very much a dictator, and Mbappé had nothing to apologize for.

What's insane is that he is essentially being blamed for a meme that people out there created. He had nothing to do with it. People are basically angry at him for responding to a question about a meme that alludes to Mao being a dictator... ...Which he very much was.

It's genuinely hilarious how so many people find a way to get mad at Mbappé, and every time they are telling on themselves.

Two thoughts Abolishing the Indian Act is good. Yeah it won’t be an easy process. But it needs to be done and tbh I’m surprised this is an initiative Carney wants to take on Also Kinew’s national profile has already been growing. But him championing this is going to elevate it further in a big way

It’s long overdue. But there are a lot of moving parts that need to be transferred to other mechanisms. It will be a huge undertaking.

Funny story: the retired head of the BdO committee at France Football was recently interviewed on French radio, and he mentioned the fate of Megan Rapinoe's BdO. The interview in French is in this YT link, starting at 43:55. youtu.be/w_nnw6Dr-d0?...

It's Ballon d'Or day. Rose Lavelle is the only #USWNT player on the 30-player shortlist. When will a U.S. player win the award again? The 2027 World Cup would have a lot to do with any "soon" answer. But even 2024 OIympic triumph and standout performances didn't produce a top-3 finisher.

A few days after the ceremony, her agent called him to ask if they could send over the trophy. He responded that the trophy doesn't come to her, she needs to come over to be properly awarded the trophy. She never did, and to this day it sits on a shelf in FF's offices.

The story goes that after FF's initial meeting with Megan, she mentioned she'd make time during the ceremony for a speech that she said will be long remembered, which he supported. But 2 days before the ceremony, she started ghosting FF's requests for further coordination.

FF offered a private jet to fly her to the ceremony, Didier Drogba (who hosted the ceremony) called her multiple times and left messages to ask her if she could make it. But nothing came of it and she didn't show up to the ceremony. The organizers felt disrespected by her about-face.

Our choice in the second round for next spring's presidential election may very well be a question of picking either cholera or the plague.

🇫🇷🤔 French Presidential Candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon: Russians are naturally our allies. And the times when they are not our allies, they are the ones invading us. If they attacked us, we would respond. But let us do nothing that would turn us into a co-belligerent against Russians.

Darkly amusing to see American leftist posters congratulating Brazil for voters who chose neither in the first round siding against Bolsonaro in the second round. There's a lesson in there for them about the notion of voting against the worst option, but they'll of course see past it.

That's why I was so negative after the first round. There's never been a case of the candidate trailing after the first round to win it in the second.

Adam Schwarz@adamjschwarz.bsky.social

So how did Lula come from behind to defeat Bolsonaro? In short, turnout. Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. But Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in the first round & won eliminated candidates' votes. A remarkable mobilisation. Second round turnout is usually below first.

An aside to this, but a big misconception I see with polls relates to the Alberta separation referendum. Polls consistently showed 70-75 remain, 25-30 leave. And they just never budged. Yet so many thought this was going to be a Brexit moment, even though Brexit polls never showed such results.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

This suggests a misconception about how polls work. Polls only need a few hundred or thousand people to be statistically representative of the population.

What a monumental success in Serbia. Young people coming together, believing in change and fighting for a better future. It should be a lesson for democracies around the globe. Our democracies can only work when young people are represented and empowered, when engagement goes beyond career politics.

We’ll see what transpires but one thing important to note: in Belgrade, in front of the electoral commission, and around parliament, broadcaster RTS and other places nearby in the centre, a significant police presence has been put in place - along with a suspiciously large number of masked hooligans

Finally some sensible election results in a country.
