Great thread, especially the math at the end

The vile attacks on Amy Acton need to be seen in the context of a party that *needs* people to believe women fabricating sexual assaults is common as rainwater. Because it’s pretty much the only way to evade the conclusion that the president is a rapist.

Everyone keeps asking me how I’m feeling about early voting so far. I’m feeling like nobody *actually* knows anything, and this is the most important midterm of our lives. I’d rather be us than them, but we can’t get comfortable. We can’t get complacent. Go vote like we’re down 3%.

I'm going to be mostly offline for a few days.... going in to have surgery to remove my gallbladder tomorrow, and there may be complications. I actually have no gallbladder-related symptoms, but routine imaging I have for another medical condition showed I have a big, fast-growing polyp in there.

I had a really awful experience 😱 with an extended hospital stay and then being shipped to a nursing home after I broke my leg in 2013 (I actually had a friend finally spring me out of there "against medical advice"). I really hope this does not turn into a repeat of that!

Update: still in the hospital, but my surgery went as smoothly as it possibly could; the surgeon was able to do it robotically so I have 5 small holes instead of a big incision. I haven't gotten the pathology report yet but the surgeon described it as a "precancerous mass". 😱

That's a cancer risk, and gallbladder cancer is basically untreatable (and kills you even faster than pancreatic cancer), so it's gotta come out.... even with my other problems adding risk to the procedure. They're going to keep me in the hospital at least a couple days for monitoring.

Colorado's ballot tracking system gives you a virtual "I voted" sticker with a picture of blue horse. I can't tell if the horse is supposed to be happy or terrified!

That "(R)" after the candidates' names on the ballot doesn't stand for "Republican". It stands for "Russian asset". 😬

I am beyond furious about Trump's betrayal of our ally Ukraine in order to make a deal with Putin that he thinks is going to save his ass in the midterm election. If Trump actually were a Russian asset instead of just a "useful idiot", what would he be doing differently?

🐕 I had an office visit with one of my long-time doctors today and he had his two big golden retrievers with him. Dogs at the doctor's office was certainly a new experience for me!

They were very well-behaved dogs who accepted pets, didn't jump or drool, and followed him in and out of the exam rooms and waited quietly in the room while we talked. He asked if I was OK with dogs and I said yes, but that's not the same as really *wanting* to be around them. I'm a cat person!

Anyway, it's his practice, he has the right to do whatever he wants there, and I suppose some people may find it relaxing to pat a nice dog while at the doctor's. I just found it a little weird.... 🤪

This is such a no-brainer! Subsidizing childcare so moms can work instead of getting welfare handouts is a win all around; besides being more cost-effective, it reinforces the idea of the dignity of work and being a productive member of society.

Roosevelt Institute@rooseveltinstitute.org

Less than a year in, New Mexico's universal childcare program is already changing who's working. @brycecovert.bsky.social reports on a new study from @chrismherbst.bsky.social finding employment among low-income mothers is up 18%, and full-time work is up 23%.

Every country should be looking at Ukraine to see the future of war. Not just the effectiveness of their women fighters, but their use of cheap drones vs big expensive weapons that are sitting ducks against them, long-range drones to attack infrastructure, etc.

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."

I've previously ordered the crinkly fish set from this vendor and the cats love those too, but they manage to "gut" the fish after a while so I thought it was time to refresh their supply with something different. The snakes are long enough to entertain 2 cats at once, attacking at both ends.

He's running.... and if this is his platform, I'm on board.

We have to prepare for the day when Donald Trump will permanently leave the White House. And, even more importantly, the day after that.

This. Don't expect other people to get it right. Don't sit out the election because your favorite candidate lost the primary, or "both parties are just as bad" (they aren't). Get out there and vote like your kids' future, or our country's future, depends on it -- because it does.

Steven Beschloss@stevenbeschloss.bsky.social

We have one last chance to get this right on Nov. 3. Can I beseech you to do everything you can?

There are several of these related South American wildcats, and while they may look cute, don't think they would make good pets -- they are definitely wild. Don't forget that the ancestors of domestic housecats decided to tame themselves rather than being forced into captivity.

Once again, I've been saying since 2016 that Trump is literally insane because he cannot tell the difference between fact and fantasy, or truth and lies. And NOBODY in a position to do so is willing to say or do ANYTHING about the emperor's new clothes.

Simon Rosenberg@simonwdc.bsky.social

More evidence that he can no longer distinguish between his fantasies and the real world.

Seriously, if it was your grandpa spinning these kinds of fantasies and not understanding that they are false, you'd be taking away the car keys, not giving him the nuclear codes.

Reporter on Bond Market: The yields have come back up since then. Have you talked to Bessent about another type of intervention.? Trump: The ultimate intervention is our military. And if we have to use that, we will.

If Trump showed up in the US House or Senate with armed goons and demanded the arrest of members who'd offended him, what would the current leadership of those chambers do?

Very unusual 18th-century portrait here. This is Margaret Kemble, American-born wife of the British general Thomas Gage. Besides the informal pose, she's wearing an elaborate faux-Turkish-style turban and caftan and no stays. 😳

It's early days yet, but I'm certainly paying attention to Ossoff. Still like Buttigieg, too, and I'd even take AOC seriously if she decided to run. I saw an article about Mark Kelly earlier today, but I think he's too old. Democrats do better when they run younger candidates!

Under The Radar@bigfatdaddy24.bsky.social

Ossoff is going to be president.

Platner seems to think he is a victim of some mysterious "they" who control the universe and who are out to get him. Here's a live picture of "them".
