Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

On the bright side two AI agents I've been experimenting with are now both trying to create fix requests across Google Maps, Waze, HERE, TomTom, & OSM having picked up and checked the correct location info from a mix of sources (Land Registry, estate agent, & me)

+ Two out of six (one agent added Apple to the list) already have fixes confirmed + Three have reports in review + One is going to end up in an email fight with an agent because log-in process is too restrictive to file a report For the user this stuff really can be boring time-saving magic...

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

404media.coChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support ProblemsBecause big tech doesn't do customer service, we are being inundated with AI-generated emails begging us for help.

📢 Journo request! Looking to speak to Sysadmins etc who have been - or are still - dealing with the PHP mayhem. Are you personally on the coalface of this? Have you been patching/ taking sites offline/ handling calls from customers? Can be anonymous if needs be. Please DM/ Signal me!

Good piece, but my takeaway from it isn't only the single man who produced the packages at short notice, but the villages of people who spotted vulnerabilities, developed patches, distributed them, implemented them &c &c

Charlie Warzel@cwarzel.bsky.social

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

"Why do the racists insist on joining our party?" weeps Reform UK, as Reform UK hosts a noted racist

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Reform UK Oxford will host a talk in November criticising "DEI" by the Nathan Cofnas, who describes his belief in + commitment to biological racism as "race realism", writing "in a meritocracy, blacks would disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment”.

I had coffee with @sarahtgold.bsky.social last week, mostly talking agents. Well, more *jabbering* than talking, TBF. We're both on the same near-manic emotional rollercoaster between "foreboding" and "excitement" about the agentic asteroid heading everyone's way.

For anyone interested in UK geospatial data & reform of £1 billion PSGA then the team have told me that the plan is to: i) engage internally w/ depts & devolved govts ii) survey to public sector in this post iii) attending public sector-only PSGA events iv) (in New Year) outside public sector

peterkwells@peterkwells.com

You could read this blogpost from the GDS Geospatial Data team about building on the £1bn Public Sector Geospatial Agreement without realising that the PSGA includes a chunk of money for open data that anyone, including those outside public sector!, can use gdsgeospatial.blog.gov.uk/2026/09/29/b...

🚨 Ireland is freeing its version of the Postcode Address File! 🚨

Richard Cantwell@manaboutcouch.bsky.social

So the Irish Government launched the 'Intelligence:Applied' programme at the AI Summit last week. Buried in the aspirational goals (see here: www.gov.ie/en/departmen...) is this particularly interesting nugget. It looks like the #Eircode database may become #OpenData! Grain of salt required.

People don't want/need the: - "freedom to use the parking app of their choice" they just, y'know, want to park and then go and do something more interesting instead "https://www.npp.org.uk/news/npp-goes-live-across-wyre-to-make-parking-simpler

Watching use of Instinct spread from my wife through her circle of friends while balancing: + my deep interest as a technologist in understanding how that group of people are adopting/using agents + my deep emotions as a human being and occasional urge to scream "you're letting it into WHAT?!?!"

This weekend I was told a well-informed tale of a group of young doctors on holiday, abroad, using their personal phones to check out the medical records of some women they met Huge culture change - and better systemwide safeguards* - needed

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

In addition to this being gross, I just don't understand *why* this happens. Come on, you work for an ambulance service, you know what happened!

(* there's lots it's feasible to do while still getting lots of benefits from systemwide access to health records when needed for care, this is SocialMedia not DetailedDesignTown)

Picture me, at a hospital, trying to find someone who'll tell me where my mum is, while passing staff tell me they don't know if there's anyone on the desk today

Oh no! All the trains are facing delays tomorrow!! *clicks* ah, it's the men's loo on a platform that these trains don't go anywhere near Thanks Trainline, excellent UX work!!
