nostalgia's so wild like what do you mean i'm gonna hear a long-forgotten song i spun a lot in my 20s and suddenly feel a dull throbbing ache in every muscle of my body tearing at my soul like a panic attack making me feel as if i'm coming apart and like, it's the spin doctors???

The Gormenghast books, or at least the world in which they take place, might be an accurate analogy of what working in tech will be like in the future: massive, empty structures run by a skeleton crew of menial workers, support a few privileged husks.

Much of the activity involves symbolic rituals whose purpose has long been forgotten, but which are still followed (at least in name) because of tradition, or some feeling of obligation. Everything is crumbling. No one knows how to fix anything. No one knows why anything is there.

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

Have you ever wanted a job where you just take pictures? Cool, cool, here you go, kid. Don't ask questions and, uh, careful where you point that thing. (my story is live today on ergot.) (no pictures, please)

I feel like the 21st century in general and social media in particular have created the facsimile/opposite of a beginner's mind while replicating its immediacy and innocence We are all the Uncarved Blockhead

Most obnoxious guy at the reptile house is the one who’s always an enclosure ahead of you. “Oh the spotted turtle is right there in the corner.” Shut the fuck up. I would‘ve found it.

Some very kind words about a particular piece (and making of video) of which I just coincidently released a colored version today. Up now on both shops.

Why is cafeteria pizza always the same? A square of dough with a scattering of cheese and pepperoni and a quiet voice whispering underneath it all as you chew explaining that if you give in, just a little, your life would be so much better. Why is that?

Someone told me a while back that every year they offer this to R.L. Stine and every year he politely declines so they can give it to someone who maybe needs it more than he does. If true, it really speaks to his humility as a writer and kindness as a human being. Don't know if it's true though.

Today's announcements: after-school activities today will take place in flames, your parents have been notified of your intent to ask Stacy to the Homecoming Dance, and please ignore the body in locker 451. You will find the locker code written on the back page of your current textbook. Ignore it.

Statistically speaking there is at least one guy whose exposure to written culture ended with reading the Far Side cartoons that misheard a conversation this morning and genuinely believes that the Nobel in Literature went to Gary Larson. And that's okay.

It's a kind of quantum split. He won't check, and will go on tell two or three guys in his model railroad club, who will all be like 'Huh, good for him.' The misunderstanding will spread slowly through the old white guy underground, never being corrected, until we live in two separate worlds.

Haha can you imagine if they awarded the Nobel in Literature to Trump. Committee's like "We're not going to give you the Peace prize (we're not crazy), but no one cares about this one, so you can have it."

Look, bullying is terrible and no one should be harassed or hurt for being different, but the rise of smug, obnoxious, nerds like Curtis Yarvin, Steven Miller and Ben Shapiro and the decline of swirlies is not a coincidence.

During college I worked for a few summers at a camp. About once per session we would set up these sort of maze/haunted houses for the kids. I loved helping out with those. One year I found this poster of Elvis that was on a transparent backing. Almost like a big slide or projector sheet.

I took the poster of Elvis and drew some spider legs coming out of his back, hung the poster up on one of the maze's dead-ends then pointed a light at it, so that when the kids came around the corner, Arachno-Elvis was hanging there at the end of the hall.

I still think that, to this day, Arachno-Elvis might be my greatest artistic accomplishment. After the maze I asked a bunch of kids what they thought of Arachno-Elvis and they had no idea what I was talking about.
