Just in time for Halloween, a MONSTER Milestone 11 update is now available. Release date info, melee retrospectives, and Musings on The World abound. It is too big for Kickstarter's character limit, so we had to split it into two. Check it out as it was intended on our Patreon!

I understand the pornography ban being new but are you seriously telling me they are only now just getting around to criminalizing incest?!

I also have a massive vinyl collection which I DJed with for years. When the time came to play more modern music I didn’t want to shell out for whatever serato nonsense was out there. I used a wonderful piece of software, xwax, along with digital time code records to play my music. Cost 20 bucks.

If you’ve never used MPD you are missing out on pure magic. Like how does this work so perfectly. You mean I can listen to all my music wherever? Output a network stream? Use it with like 50 different clients?!?? Backend/frontend is the most amazing software paradigm ever when you can access both.

But what about my library and playlists? Bash script to convert my MPD-organized files into “crates” of records and rsync to copy everything to an extra HDD I used on my Gentoo Linux air gapped never-updated (the way I like it) amazingly low tech laptop. I played weddings with this setup!

Because it’s never updated, I can turn the laptop on and it still works. Still have my coffins set up and my ridiculous bash script from 15 years ago still copies my MPD library over so I can spin it. Shit is amazing.

MPD (music player daemon) and SSH must be the only pieces of software I use that inspire just as much wonder and awe now as they did when I first encountered them. They also never make me unhappy. Lifetime achievement award. More software like this please.

DAoC was such a special game to me and was the closest analogue to a MUD in MMO form to me. Shadowbane and WAR (Warhammer Online) both had similar, experimental vibes. They were all PvP focused but the myriad ways people could interact in their settings was so cool. Games connecting people rule.

Really happy that folks are enjoying Nighthawks. Now that it’s out, I have been focused on getting back to Gilt and trying to make something really special out of it.

I am of the firm belief we are currently witnessing a psychic pandemic where the minds of people are infected by a deep despair brought on by crushing helplessness and flagrant, persistent disrespect and devaluing. It’s transmissable. It has slowly spread to every corner of the earth.

In the meantime, it is incredibly frustrating and saddening to see so many people simply unable to function all of a sudden. They don’t think anyone cares about them. And the world is continually affirming their beliefs.

This is why I believe in the game we’re making, too. Because we can give people something to believe in and people get to be part of it.

Two years ago I thought we would end this by throwing off our shackles in angst and anger. “I’m sorry, we can’t live like this! We are making something better!” Just like COVID was supposed to be over in a couple weeks, I was seriously wrong. People are flattened. There’s no air left.

I don’t know what it will take to make people turn the corner, but I do believe people need something to live for and it’s our duty to provide these things for each other. Call it the human spirit if you want. The global depression can only end if people create things to uplift others.

We moved from nonsense like “quiet quitting” and “people don’t want to work” to a self-fulfilling prophecy of creating a world where people actually don’t want to function at all. There is a deep pall of depression on everyone. It’s dangerous to find and create joy right now. It’s lonely.

Why do people work? Why do our societies function (as imperfectly as they may)? Because people give a shit: about themselves, about others, about the world. No one feels that right now. And no one thinks anyone gives a shit about them! Turns out we’re never cogs in a machine. We are humans.

Nighthawks has sold TEN THOUSAND copies in less than one week! For a tiny studio like ours, this is a huge milestone. To all the supporters, backers, wishlisters, and everyone who believed in this game and us, thank you so much.
