I'm tired of living through interesting times. I want to be disinterested in my times. 🙏🙏🙏

I live <10 minutes from Bastille, where the French student protests meet to start their march tomorrow in Paris. Things are tightening up much more than usual tonight (which makes sense). We've been under curfew all week with drone and helicopter enforcement. Prayers for the students appreciated!

Is the online LSJ down for anyone else? I'm just getting the cloudflare 'You have been Blocked' page. My inclination is that it is down because they use PHP and it isn't patched yet (this is one way to block traffic). 🪔 #BiblicalGreek

Question for the Episco/Anglo group: I lead the acolytes at our Cathedral. I'm making a team of people who will take the responsibility of leading for a given service (assigning roles, answering questions, encouragement, problem solving, etc). Is there a term used for this team? one you like? ⚓

"A dinner at a friend’s place is tangible. I am able to go, accept their hospitality, thank them, and leave. Yet, how do I experience the grace and love of God when it often feels more abstract? That one is harder for me to answer. In my good moments I know to trust in God’s promises." Read more 🔗

It looks like paying for managed hosting on Nextcloud and WordPress was worth it. Those teams are on that. However, I'm sitting here waiting for official Docker images to drop so I can refactor & update our platform. So for the time being life.urbanmonastic.org is still offline. Hopefully tonight 🤞

We have taken our monastic platform offline for the time being due to a major security vulnerability disclosed in the underlying programming language we are using. As soon as the software is patched (and verified), it will be brought back online. Thanks for understanding. Our website remains open.

The Right Reverend Mark Edington is doing a good job leading the Episcopal Church in Europe from our cathedral in Paris. I’m glad to help and be a part of this community in Paris, France, and Europe. ⚓️

There is a helicopter doing laps tonight overhead in Paris to help enforce the curfew put in place to deter looting. So I guess Paris is trying to twin with Minneapolis with their horrible helicopter harassment.

Oh cool. There are police drones too. Seems like the government strategy is to make everyone’s life in Paris miserable so we turn against… high school students? The state must support and nurture every one of our students!

If evil is about being, then I need not look at the evil I do or participate in. If evil is about what I do, then everyone is responsible for the vile and evil that they bring into the lives of others, and their own. Jesus (and the canon of scripture) is clear that people do evil, they aren't evil.

If you oppose violence, colonialism, and genocide you need to be better than those things. You cannot destroy those who worship and master death with their own tools. Despair doesn’t overcome death and hatred: only hope and love can do that. What our world needs are artisans of peace!

We made it to October 19th before cleaning and turning on our wall heaters. I don't think they'll be doing too much right now but we did get down to 4°/39° this morning. It was time. I always hope to make it to november, but I never quite get there.

Lord, Open our hearts to Your generosity, the ways that You love us, and the life we live with You. Amen. A Blessing for our Twenty-Ninth Week of Ordinary Time.

It’s 11pm and the air around our apartment is finally not mixed with tear gas. The French state needs to do better. Using the police to escalate violence to demonize and discredit people with real grievances helps no one.

I saw some kids loot a store from my apartment in #Paris. Never seen that happen in person before. They broke the window, pulled it out, and less than a handful of kids ran off with things. Don't forget that insurance exists to make things whole. The state should protect people, not capital.

Systemic hopelessness leads to days like today in Paris. Leaders will demonize these kids instead of fighting to give them what they need to feel included, supported, hopeful, and to have viable futures. France has been failing many kids for many years. I hope we can do better for them tomorrow.

Our whole street smells of tear gas from République. The police in France need to be reformed, and the weapons they are allowed to wield against citizens curtailed.

The Episcopal Lay Preachers Conference has begun for those of us in Europe. Looking forward to the weekend with those of us over here, and back in the Americas. Anyone else attending this weekend? ⚓

17 Octobre has begun. Pray for the students of France. May we all help them have the hope, safety, and support they need to create a better future for themselves and us all.

😆 this car should be illegal on every road in every country. Imagine living a floor or two above ground level and being killed by a car coming through your window. How do people still think this man is a once-in-a-generation genius? Or maybe it's for the lucrative themepark stunt show market...

No! I can’t believe this. This is in our neighborhood. We go often and take others there. It was the oldest still operating covered market in Paris. I’m gutted.

I trained in six new Acolytes for our cathedral today. It was really wonderful. Before the service I trained in five students and then they all served with me. They did so good. So wonderful!

It is wild to consider that all it will take to be super human in a couple years is to have not used AI/LLMs (like ChatGPT). I'm unprepared for the declines in attention, cognition, and engagement these tools are/will impose on so many people.

This is what I imagine it’s like for clergy to race home from their diocesan convention that ends on Saturday in time for church Sunday morning. ⚓️

Well, turns out the person cast in spain was cast and not me. The french casting director did recommend and encourage me to get an agent, so I'm praying about that this weekend. It would have been fun.

Paul Prins@paul.urbanmonastic.org

I'm still waiting... 🙏 appreciated. 6 weeks ago I was invited to audition for a cast supporting role in an upcoming feature film. I've never acted before. Yet, I crushed the audition & callback. The french casting director put me up for the role. The hickup: it was also cast in Spain.

"The idea of live-streaming a firing squad execution is reprehensible in the extreme and will cause moral injury to everyone involved. We need to ask ourselves who we have become as a nation when senior officials decide to make a spectacle of state-sponsored violence." ⚓️

Pope: “In every age, there is no shortage of false teachers who exploit the religious sentiments of many believers for their own interests, often pushing them to radicalize certain aspects of the teaching they have received at the expense of the whole — the whole, which is Christ and his Gospel.”

Hundreds of students walked past my office today on their way to protest here in Paris. 70 minutes later the police were lining up where they usual stage before moving on to brutalize them. The police appear to be jovial and in good spirits about it. #Blocus #France #StudentProtest

I want to invite you to be praying for the students of France and their blocus protests. I believe that every student should have a safe, peaceful and hopeful school environment. May every student in France have this, and may the state find ways to make it so.
