I blame this on IPv4 and the obvious resultant address exhaustion leading to NATs making pure peer to peer communication harder, ensuring that we needed centralized places to meet up instead of making it normal to gather at your friend's house figuratively.

we fucked up bigtime when the internet slipped from the utopian promise of being able to connect with ANYone into the hellscape of being connected to EVERYone

there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.

My God We're going to need to build out an entire guillotine industry to handle the people who created this

Some children in Dilley were so distraught they cut themselves or talked about suicide, parents told ProPublica. They said kids lost their appetites after finding worms and mold on their food, had trouble sleeping, and were constantly sick. (Published February)

Every accusation he makes is a confession. Remember when he called that rescue guy a pedo while trying to get an invitation to the “wildest party” on Epstein Island? Every time.

"Why are people so negative about the economy?" Consider this. There are two possibilities: 1) He's right and my livelihood is screwed. Maybe not 18 months but soon. 2) He's full of shit, it won't happen, and AI is a giant bubble that will crash the economy. Why would I feel good about either?

The defining principle of our society is that people who were lucky during the dot com boom or Web 2.0 should have vast and ever-growing individual power over the entire world. The only acceptable check on their power is their squabbles with each other.

From @meganwachspress.bsky.social’s post (on having been the target of a professor’s advances as a student): “To want someone who wants to learn from you is to want someone for their powerlessness.”

What a fucking waste of dev time. I wonder how many hours he billed for a shitty regex.

This DOGEr wants more transparency in code! *DOGE fired the technologists who wrote open source code (18F) *"Transparency will solve our problems" is a civic tech perspective from about 2012. But they figured out changing govt is more complicated and requires real work!

Interesting piece which reveals a lot of the tech bro ignorance of government: DOGEr comes in, expects to find lots of inefficiency, is at least willing to acknowledge he was wrong unlike the hard core ideologues.

So, I had an interesting conversation last week. For @fastcompany.com, I spoke with Sahil Lavingia, the founder of Gumroad, on his decision to work at the VA, a role he has thanks to DOGE. He was remarkably transparent. www.fastcompany.com/91330297/dog... (Gift link)

fastcompany.comThanks to DOGE, Gumroad’s founder has a second job with the VAThe creator economy pioneer Sahil Lavingia on his eyebrow-raising decision to embrace DOGE—and, after thinking it over, open source.

My Windows 11 start menu was unresponsive today, unable to find local apps. I disabled Bing search "feature" and then it started working as expected: Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search" -Name "BingSearchEnabled" -Value 0

The old rules were designed under the assumption that a newspaper is responsible for everything it's reporters say because an editor and a lawyer come behind them and agree that everything was defensible. But the new law acknowledges that this is more like a bulletin board in front of a farm store.

You are up to date.
