SSO should really not be an enterprise feature. Working on making a moose an Oauth provider so you can log in into apps with your own identity from your moose box. No need for gmail, fb, insta login The biggest limit I'm seeing right now is the number of apps (even open source) that support this.

forcing you to upgrade to enterprise for sso seems exceptionally bad now this just needs to be on for everyone

Strongly agree with dax here

there's no such thing as a rogue agent man its software someone made and deployed they are responsible for what it does cannot let this blame shifting occur

NEW: ProPublica’s Jake Pearson lost $10,000 mimicking the betting patterns of a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company’s “responsible gaming” safeguards. One week in, he was invited to become a VIP — and faced little pushback as he spiraled.

This was just a good talk. I really recommend anyone using a computer to watch. After seeing the prototypes you feel like we've been sleeping at the wheel, of desktop design.

My "Future of Desktop UX (part 2)" talk at #KDE Akademy is now up and it's racking up lots of views. I'm excited people want to discuss this more. Now I just need someone with Wayland experience to help me prototype this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7Af...

The conflict that we're seeing right now is between how much the AI labs want to get the credit for that advancement. They are but a tool, they are useful and should get the credit as any other tool.

I feel like math has mostly been a human endeavor, even though using tools is a big part of it. Inserting a company in the middle of it which has very different incentives kinda poisons the well.

Now, should AI still be used in fields like art or research? Definitely, we should use whatever tool exists that will help make progress happen faster and enrich everyone.

This is similar to what is happening currently in AI art. Music is one of the quickest way to make a connection with another person and people feel betrayed when that is faked by AI.

The problem I see is hijacking the norms of collaboration and competition in math by trying to squeeze in a product (openai's models) in the middle to get some market share.

I think this line from OpenAI's response: “we cannot rule out that de-identified data derived from their usage of our products helped improve our models.”, is a generic legalese that is just there to cover them legally and be in sync with their ToS.

From a legal POV it's true, but the optics are just so bad and gives a lot of room for interpretation. If they really wanted to, it would be pretty simple to confirm that his chats were not used in training or finding the solution.

The first part that hurts here is that it's starting to happen in niches of research that still only exist because of human curiosity. With no direct monetization tied to them: math, astronomy, etc

And the second one is about trust. No matter what explanation OpenAI gives, it's really hard to believe them, taking into account their history.

I think it's not new that when research is being done inside companies and not by traditional research institutions. It has been happening in chemistry / pharma for decades.

It is not in the spirit of the math community to speed run to a solution that you knew it was worked on and almost solved just to push your commercial product.

There are so many tools out there but what matters sitting down and actually building it. I like these types of events because it forces you to actually ship something. If you have an idea that you want to quickly prototype, come join and get it built in 2 hours. We'll help.

This is an amazing book and looking into getting a physical copy. A bit of a sticker shock that shipping to EU is almost as much as the book 😳

Found out about flipt from @mark_a_phelps. Really great piece of software. I added v1 to the malmo store so anyone can have their own feature flag software. Very cheap to run Here is how to set it up 🧵 #selfhosting #buildinpublic

Adam's post is blowing up on HN right now and it's a fun read. The post is mostly about how to have your own corner of the internet in a format that is easy to migrate or self-host if needed. I guess making it cheap with no lock-in is everyone's goal right now.

I love markdown for taking notes, open format, but I'm ok with using Obsidian and Typora to write that. Not open source tools. It's important that the underlying format is open and has no lock in.

Same with the indie web, I think it's fine to use hosting providers that offer convenience as long as you're ok with the little loss of freedom that comes with it. At the end of the day it depends how much you trust that service and how much you're ok with letting go.

Even though he talks about some techniques that remind of the early 2000, FileZilla and SFTP (haven't heard those words in a while), I think the goal is to use tech that is as standardized and commoditized as possible.

True, that this offer the best, highest flexibility but the UX is also not great. I don't think there's anything wrong with using modern tech tools if, the underlying result is in an open format.

You can now choose the access control for your installed apps in malmo. You can make them publicly available, or only accessible to you. #selfhosting #buildinpublic

Some apps have their own login so you might want to make them public. But for other apps, you don't want to fret about anyone guessing your url and accessing your private data.

Looking at importing cal.com to the malmo store. I know they recently went "private" but apparently they relincesed the code to MIT and launched a community version that has some functionality removed. But apparently they don't a docker image published? Can't seem to find any

I rarely want to talk bad about products, but I can't with the pile of 💩 that is Linkedin. This is the image that I get 50% of the time when I'm trying to write a post there. It of courses loses everything. Both Firefox and Chrome.

The find: Our image was UEFI-only: systemd-boot + an EFI partition, no BIOS boot code anywhere. So under legacy BIOS the firmware finds nothing to boot and just hangs. Booting from Hard Disk is literally SeaBIOS shrugging. #selfhosting #buildinpublic

Very interesting problem I've hit with the malmo OS. It apparently does not boot on Intel based VMs on Hetzner. Specifically the ones in the CX Gen3 series The funny thing is that that series of VMs have either Intel or AMD cpus, but you can't choose. They randomly assign one

Fix: make the image dual-firmware. Keep systemd-boot for UEFI, add GRUB for BIOS (+ a 1 MiB BIOS boot partition). Both bootloaders side by side. The kernel and everything above it is untouched.

I have a fix but now I have to randomly start VMs in the hopes that an Intel will be picked. Fortunately they are pretty cheap and I only need them for minutes. Will report back
