A fun image processing distraction today -- how to clean up the noisy background of a photo of a microfilm of a medieval manuscript? Thread, in which I use Photoshop, but similar tools are available in GIMP and other image processing software.

Got a bit of a range in quality, though much of the same type—the first picture is more or less usable, the second is tough going (especially because a lot of the words are abbreviated, so it's important to see details).

Sorry for vanishing, we arrived at Glas for dinner 😉 As Katrine said they were making statements as masters of their craft; calling them “artists” in the modern sense would have bewildered them as alien to the world they worked in — and in any case “artista” was for grammarian/logician/rhetorician…

effects of HTML: - mood lift, euphoria - increased giggling and laughing - creative, philosophical or deep thinking: ideas flow more easily - boring tasks or entertainment can become more interesting or funny - sensation of insight - intense feelings of wonder

(my first thought was drawing charts on it, but I think it's more evocative to imagine plotting individual data points on it as they come in, so it's like a disposable database table you're appending to. a whole chart feels too much like a finished artifact, not right for this form)

yeah, you can't program your phone from your phone and really be a peer of the Apple/Google software on it, so in some sense it's not a "computer" at all, it's closer to a video game console than a PC

it's quite simple. phone is fake computer

otoh, when I'm booking a flight or train or concert ticket in China or SE Asia or something, I'm always like, I should probably use the phone app (often I _must_ use the phone app) the phone is the way the vast majority of people are interacting with the service! it's what the service was made for!

this is what it looks like when you book flights from your phone

eee pc / other netbooks were cool category because for the first time they weren't 'laptop', where 'laptop' in the 2000s was a pretty expensive, slightly more portable replacement for a desktop

This computer is the reason you can't download all software for free. The Franklin Computer Corp was a computer manufacturer founded in the early 1980s. Their flagship product was a clone of the Apple II, one of the most popular personal computers of the day. 1/4

Greetings from the Northwestern University Transportation Library, where Rachel just showed me the original!

wifi network that your phone automatically connects to that only exists inside a Faraday cage box that you have to put your phone inside, so you can never see or use your phone while it's on the network

has anyone played around with Airpods apis (head tracking for spatial audio)? my hope is to play around with controlling an app without having to look at a screen.. would be an interesting design challenge and would be great when walking around, on the subway, or just a diff experience

Trying to find a good way to build intuition around distance field fonts: how about comparing it to a map? The land is the filled text, the beach is the outline, the ocean is transparent (optionally a glow/shadow effect). Not sure whether this will make sense to the reader.

I like all of these but especially the quotes -- very "vivid assertions"

made some updates to hopeinsource.com, was fun to think of some new views on the same data (like some other experiments I had)

More shared context because ~everything is said out loud, in detail It’s makes computing more social and shared in the sense we understand what the other person is trying to doing on their otherwise silent and unshared screen. Doesn’t scale to more than a few people in a space, but nice for a pair
