Y'all know I still code games the old-fashioned way, because I do that on my stream for everyone to see. There is a strict no-AI policy for any visual work I do, professionally or personally. I want to draw, animate, and design. It's my craft. But software is also utilitarian to that end.

I'm not minimizing, its proliferation has just hijacked the process. Using digital tools and to do better, faster work was always part of the job of the digital artist, so it seems systemically impossible now to not leverage it, moral implications aside, even if I want to do the drawing myself.

What can a guy like me do? What do you think this process should otherwise look like? Genuinely asking. Its something I've been thinking about a lot.

Now, I've experimented and made utility software with AI (on my website, disclosed as such, including source). I wouldn't call them vibe-coded: I'd ask for a function, read, understand, integrate, test, and debug it. Its similar to a pre-AI workflow except I'm not constantly going back to examples.

The content serves up by AI is always ethically dubious at best, but also the modern internet has that process baked in. These days, there's not a functional or computational difference in asking Gemini for an example of a JS canvas draw function, or using it through search to direct you to one.

With Super Sunny World finished, I'm thinking about what's next. I've been porting gameplay from my pre-SSW project into the SSW engine. The projects share the same roots, but I'd rather move the old ideas forward than return to the old codebase. Here's a fun little crossover. 🙂 #nesdev

i am the sort of autistic where if firefox has a UI update I have to learn how its internal stylesheet works to go in and manually change it all back

🚨🚨🚨 PSA: I believe someone is using a "bootleg" version of "Witch n' Wiz" called "Witch & Wizard" to distribute a virus. If you get a message from anyone asking to test a PC version of Witch n' Wiz, and it's not directly from me, please REPORT the user, and DO NOT DOWNLOAD.

First, I love my job on Paw Patrol and wouldn't leave. But also I'm at a point in my career where I don't really want to chase a bigger paycheck, more prestige or notoriety, or be associated with any other brands. Really I just want to express myself and see what comes out.

I'm hoping that before the end of the year, I'll have more of a clean slate and more energy than I started the year with. I'll have finished the prep work which will allow me to do some of the more ambitious things I've been chewing on. My health is in a better spot now than it has been for a while.

And I have more resources and more skills now than ever before, which makes me more independent. So it's never been truer for me thay if i wanna be the sort of person who leads creative projects i gotta... Y'know... Start leading creative projects.

This means leading more creative projects of my own. My experience tells me that every business partner/studio you have in terms in finances is always on their own agenda, and you always have compromises with them. So I'd like to be able to do those projects independently.

Anyone over 40 can confirm that it's more a matter of physical and mental energy than anything else to be able to take on more. The older you get, you just get tired. Momentum and focus come at a cost. The idea pile keeps getting bigger, and you can only pick up one thing at a time.

I like retro tech but honestly I wouldn't encourage anyone to buy an old or clone console, a 30 year old TV, or dump money on tapes. I find analog tech often unwieldy. Just find a way to enjoy things that feels unique to you. Ricing, modding, and tinkering is where most of the fun is.

Probably not a great time to start in the middle of a house move, but the rest of the year, I'm going to try to increase my capacity for productive work. I feel like I was on a decline last year, then I was putting extra energy into my health and fitness. Now I'm ready to start trying to do more.

things to get used to in your 40s - trim eyebrows weekly - complete underarm hygiene regimen (you get stinkier) - knees hurt - dog is best friend and role model - monitor salt intake - intentional zone 2 cardio - younger people make you feel sad - "why do i still have this?" - "whats this lump"

Kicking things off on Bluesky again. Hey all! My name is Matt and I've been a Visual Effects Compositor for over ten years. I mainly work in animation but also work in live action. My most recent work can be seen in GOAT, KPop: Demon Hunters and Across the Spider-verse! Cheers!

imposter syndrome never goes away, because any time anyone makes something to express themselves in a way you find appealing, you'll wish you could make and express the same thing, and you simply can't, because you're not them

there's always that feeling like "I can't execute that, i must not be good enough" and while you can always improve your craft and learn new skills, you can only create something wholly unique to you. i've worked with world-class talent, everyone feels this way

I hate how morning people hijacked society. Y'all making me show up somewhere before 9am? That's as cruel as me showing up to your house in the middle of the night and banging on the door.

Name a Game Boy game you played with Sampled speech?

Asobitech@asobitech.com

The Game Boy sometimes has short voice samples, like “PIKACHU!” in Pokemon Yellow. Only Perfect Dark has full voice acting. But now, we’ve added speech to all cut scenes in our new GBC game, D*Fuzed. All voices: @zombiworkshop.bsky.social & @kirstybrinkman.bsky.social Available at incube8games.com

As might be expected, works for reading #SNES controllers over Link Port too. (at least, this one). On the screen are a bunch of sequential reads with different buttons pressed and their matching bits cleared. #GameBoy #SuperNintendo

bbbbbr@bbbbbr.bsky.social

Prompted by the paint demo below, taking a lil detour to try hooking a #SNES Mouse directly up to #GameBoy (snes controller protocol over link port). Commited a few crimes with the latch and clock polarity (signal inverter not here yet), but it still manages to ~work on a DMG. #gbdk #retrogaming

A bit late for #PortfolioDay but it's been a while since I've done one of these anyway, would be good to reintroduce myself: I'm Juanito, lead artist at Nitrome. I pushed pixels on Shovel Knight Dig's DLC and TMNT Shredder's Revenge.
