This week we built comments into our document editor to show off what can be done with fine-grained permissioning on spaces! Check it out here: https://chalk.habitat.network

It's that time of the week again! Today, we're sharing Chalk, a document editor that shows how apps that need fine-grained permissioning can be built on spaces. Chalk is built on our last three releases!
I'll be speaking about @habitat.network at the next DWeb Virtual Meetup on Thursday! Come through :)
Join us at our next DWeb Virtual Meetup >>> β¨ DWeb Camp JOMO (or FOMO, in case you missed it) β¨ Thurs 27 August at 19 CET / 1pm ET / 10am PT Come hear some of the talks you may have missed and share takeaways and memories from Camp! Register here: tix.dod.ngo/dwebcamp/vir...
Saving this cheatsheet, thank you @ngerakines.me for compiling!
A deep dive on permissioned-data space access. The dials, policies, and the difference between handing out keys and revoking them.

We've spent the last couple weeks deep diving on the permissioned spaces proposal and what it means for Habitat's use case! We plan to release a formalized spec on what we're building soon, but in the mean time appreciate any thoughts on our design.

i feel this so hard. a realization i had about my career is that i'm basically trying to build towards a world where people build and use technology on their own terms, rather than get used by it. user data ownership is a starting point, but it extends far beyond that.
I don't want technology to be a one-sided conversation. I do not want to impose technology on people. I want them to tell me how technology can serve them better. The only way to do that is by building a foundation of trust and sharing knowledge.
circling back to this because i think it's both! just used @microcosm.blue in conjunction with @habitat.network to quickly get a feature working that needs public + private data intermingled (local-first / without an appview)
but i do think making local-first in atproto easy to build / reliable / usable means growing shared infra in the ecosystem (like microcosm), or making PDS providers a bit beefier. we're going the latter route.
We've been using this internally, and slowly pushing updates! Our permission model is described here! habitat.network/habitat/api/...
Had a great call with @offline.arushibandi.com who is building @habitat.network The team has launched the first version of their Habitat Hub, and their first local first **private data** app - a collaborative notes editor, Habitat Docs habitat.network/habitat/docs

my favorite thing about #atmosphereconf is that it wasnt a technical conference. ppl were there to talk about humanity, not some tech stack watch @kissane.myatproto.social's "Landslide", or @offline.arushibandi.com's "Rewilding" talks to get a sense genuinely spiritual manifestos for a wounded web
i was nervous to give a "heartfelt" talk as @notplants.bsky.social called it, so i'm relieved and happy it resonated with people β€οΈ
Still thinking about the @habitat.network vision @offline.arushibandi.com spoke about, we need to rewild the internet
just wow. thank you so much @bmann.ca @ngerakines.me @knowtheory.net @essentialrandom.bsky.social @lucca.northsky.team and everyone else who helped put on such an amazing conference! feeling inspired for what's next and grateful to be a part of this community.

hi #ATmosphereConf and in the spirit of ABL: we built a local-first p2p markdown editor on our private data implementation: habitat.network/habitat/docs/, it permissions p2p connections in addition to records find @offline.arushibandi.com @sashankg.bsky.social @eagraf.dev to ask us more!
This is your ONE chance to imagine the future!!!!
#AtmosphereConf in-person attendees! At 2PM, @offline.arushibandi.com and @ivansigal.eurosky.social are putting on a workshop called, "What futures can we build together?" I'll be there to help out, and I look forward to exploring the subject matter with you. atmosphereconf.org/event/Bzy111e

I am really looking forward to Arushi's @offline.arushibandi.com talk. As we were wrapping #AtmosphereConf 2025, she said thank you & a few other kind words on her way out the door. So I'm very pleased to see this talk, "in conversation with several of the talks from last year"
wow was trevor paglen's talk at the sf moma a trip. one message in particular that feels relevant to @habitat.network "the images are now staring back" control over our data means no spying, and no spying means we are all less susceptible to manipulation online. more important now than ever.
if there's anything I've realized over the last month, it's that there are no *technical reasons* we can't have the internet we want. slowly, but surely (leaflet by leaflet) we're building that. a calendar app that can't track you. even with its minimal interface, what a magical feeling π±
spaces, meet cliques! how we built a minimal calendar on pear (our permission-enforcing ATProto repo) and what we had to build to get there.
