... I'm not just hating on palm trees because they are useless, annoying weeds; I watched a lot of videos of the fires and it's pretty clear that they are super-spreaders of fire.

I think these fires wouldn't have spread as quickly through residential areas if there weren't so many palm trees. The palms catch on fire easily, smolder for a long time, and they are the tallest things around; once they catch on fire, their embers travel super far and catch other things on fire.
