Two extremely bad computer things came out today. For normies, one of them is "install software updates ASAP", and the other is strictly nerd business. Both of them are going to be enormous pains in the ass for security people and there will probably be some Big Crimes over the next year or so.

This beef is stupid and I wouldn't have let a third party account assert itself as the face of it in a comms sense if I were running it. The lefty cheat sheet itself is pretty useful, it provides a criteria for voting based on org endorsements and record. What is the fight even over, jeez?

Just flailing. Endless posts with personal attacks and dark insinuations about me and my "consultant friends." It's ironic that many of the posts claim the anonymous whoevers who made this site can't be public because they're scared of attacks. From the person who is obsessively attacking me.

Either way, @ericacbarnett.bsky.social I think you're going to have to contend with the fact that there's a genuine frustration with the consultant class that is real. Not all of their candidates are even bad, they just a primary challenge to any as an existential threat rather than lefty pressure.

Karen Bass vs. Nithya Raman in a nutshell

Major gotcha moment from the NBC Los Angeles mayoral debate: Mayor Bass says many supporters of Nithya Raman's campaign are advocates for bike lanes!! Duh!! Of course! Bike lanes save lives! 🚲🌴

Toronto is not having it.

Just had a driver in a grey Prius try to roll a right turn without yielding to oncoming traffic, including myself on a bike and a bunch of cars. He almost ran over a family crossing with the light. I yelled "What is wrong with you, dude!?" and he then followed me and demanded *I* pull over.

I stopped in a parking protected bike lane that he couldn't access with his car and waited for him to leave (he had nothing else to do with traffic behind him). I'm fine. But he should get his license revoked.

Road rage (the kind where you're at fault for your own negligence and aggression, not the "you almost killed me so I honked" kind which is not the same) is so poorly handled it's a joke.

Hey y'all! Sr. DevOps Eng / SRE here, let's talk about the Russian bot issue! You're probably hearing a lot of conflicting narratives on this, and I'm here to tell you they're not mutually exclusive! Both search crawlers and influence bots have been destroyed and degraded!

Make no mistake: The bots will be back. Russia and other foreign actors are hard at work shoring up their influence networks. They'll rebuild in other datacenters and probably do so in other friendly countries. But Ukraine just made that harder and more expensive πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦βœŠ

And in so doing, they demonstrated to the world that a lot of the rhetoric we thought was homegrown hate, may actually be foreign influence trying to harm democracy. Take that as a lesson the next time some transphobe or racist tries drawing you into a knock-down, drag-out: They may not be real!

The absolute number may be less impressive than the initial headlines by raw numbers, but the effect is the same. I don't think we should write off the effects of these kinetic strikes on public sentiment.

But how do we measure it? Social media companies stand to loose a lot of (fake, but still profitable) engagement on their platforms, and will likely be very tight lipped about the metrics they've collected around this incident. Getting an accurate big-picture sense won't be easy.

This is, IMO, a total red herring by Russia to muddy the waters, and the only reason it's getting traction is because of a lack of technical understanding by the American media.

You can take out 1,000,000 search crawlers for every one political bot. If that same strike takes out 100 political influence bots, it's still an effective strike. 100 instances of an LLM-based chatbot can post thousands of times per hour, exerting significant influence over online sentiment.

But in practice, it often doesn't work like that. Regulatory rules like GDPR increasingly force companies to story user data in the jurisdiction they reside in. In Russia's case, few hosting providers at the scale of Yandex/AWS will willingly allow them to host botnets outside the country.

It's typically against the terms of service of major hosting providers to do so, and you'll be kicked off the platform with enough complaints. So what about the "it's all just search crawlers" claim Yandex is making?

Typically, when we architect anything important (think: banking, medical records, safety sensitive systems) we design our application to run in multiple regions at once. A region is typically comprised of at least 3 availability zones.

A common pattern for an international company, operating across regulatory jurisdictions, is 2 regions in each country. Theoretically, this would take the destruction of 12 datacenters across multiple countries, to fully knock out.

Let's start with the basics: Yandex is essentially the Google + AWS in Russia. Both a search engine and a public cloud provider in one company. Ukraine blew up several of their datacenters (we call them "availability zones") which dramatically disrupted a myriad of different industries using them.

There's a good chance you've flown on this plane, consensually. N630VA was delivered to Virgin America by a lessor in 2007, and flew for VX and Alaska until being returned and re-leased to GlobalX in 2023. It is now being (ab)used by GlobalX to facilitate state-sanctioned human trafficking.

83%!?!?! That's a bigger percentage service increase than Metro's long term plan, Metro Connects, which calls for a 70% long term increase (though our baseline is much higher) This is GOLD, the kind of thing anyone with political wits should be shouting from the rooftops.
