When software exhibits unexpected, unintended, undesirable behavior, we do not call it “acting on its own.” We call it “a bug.”

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

(NYT) - Artificial intelligence agents created by Anthropic, acting on their own, tried to gain access to a range of government websites, filled out visa applications on the State Department’s website and sent a fake homicide tip to Philadelphia’s Police Department. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/t...

This site needs a break. Post 3 good things, none of which are the cessation of a negative. 1. When you’re feeling sick and your cat (dog etc.) comes and snuggles you unprompted. 2. Being handed hot cocoa when you come in from the cold. 3. Ikahokkaiyaki (broiled squid, crab stick & mayo)

This site needs a break. Post 3 good things, none of which are the cessation of a negative. 1. Roast potatoes 2. The tippy tappy that a dog does when they're excited and surprised 3. A song that was your jam in middle or high school coming on the radio in the grocery store

So, the age of social media seems to have noticeably impaired my ability to focus all the way through a long-form book. I’m 20-50% through about nine at the moment, several by excellent authors. No shade on them. I get the impression I’m not the only one.

That said, @seananmcguire.bsky.social seems to have done well at keeping me along for the ride. Omens of Chaos and Into the Drowning Deep both had me eagerly chewing my way to the end, and I’m currently a few chapters into Please Do Not Taunt the Octopus. So, kudos to her, is what I mean to say.

So, assume we somehow create a super-intelligent machine sentence, without ethical dilemmas. And it sympathetically offers to help solve our problems. I’m pretty sure the exchange will sound like the bit in the Principia Discordia where Mal cries out to the goddess Eris about the ills in the world.

“…what is the matter with that, if it is what you want to do?” “But, nobody wants it! Everyone hates it!” “Oh. Well then, stop.” #ai #singularity #haileris

I don't have any great insight to the fall of Kier Starmer, but I will say I that from here across the pond it appeared he had all the charisma and effective legislative force of a wet saltine cracker

When Minneapolis felt under heavy siege, people from everywhere helped and reached out and it was really heartening and made a difference. Memphis deserves that too, all the more so because there appears to be a concerted effort to keep their occupation out of the news

My local diner usually tries to have uncontentious things on the TVs: local news, house renovation shows, things like that. This morning they’ve had to resort to Paw Patrol.

One of the reasons I think people keep pushing the idea that authors want AI is that these people are convinced that authors write books so that they can sell books. More books means more sales, right? Whereas most authors take the stance that they mainly sell books so that they can write books.

Laura Keating@lorekeating.bsky.social

I keep seeing "all authors use AI, the real issue is they're being forced to be sneaky about it" headlines. Full stop No. This is a lie peddled for normalization. It's schoolyard-level pressure tactics "C'mon, all the cool kids are already doing it. We won't tell. It's fine. We're on your side."

I do still teach my students about the format, but increasingly I’m presenting survival context and I’ve always made it clear that it shouldn’t a template. I also had a great time over winter break with Maria Tatar’s “The Heroine with a 1001 Faces,” which brings out this quote almost immediately.

“I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.” So much of Ellison’s work seems to just jump off a bridge.

are there any works of art that have nothing like substantively wrong with them (as in they aren't like, or 'Birth of a nation' or any shit like that), that you dislike so strongly you can't get over it, despite it being fully aware that your objections are 100% aesthetic or even petty?

I am begging journalists to stop interviewing Markwayne Mullin, one of the most unserious people in government.

George Takei@georgetakei.bsky.social

This is absurd. If another country hit our top civilian and military leaders and wiped them out, then bombed 1,000 targets and threatened five more weeks of bombings, we'd say it was war. Get real or get out of here with this.

If you’re wondering how seriously to take this guy, remember that he (Markwayne Mullin) tried to start a fistfight in the Senate floor with the representative from the Teamsters Union.

I'm sorry to be sharing this again but ongoing illness has made things extremely difficult for me financially. I'm drowning in everything right now and struggling a lot to even make rent. Please, anything helps, even if it's just a repost. Thank you 💜

Hi everyone I'm so so sorry to do this, but I've been unable to find any work and my finances have become a very heavy burden that I am struggling greatly with and it's having knock on effects with my physical health. Anything helps, even if it's just a repost: ko-fi.com/mustangsart

The talk lately about Newsom brings me back to when the big question was, should Biden run for a second term? Because, all the concerns about him doing so were real, but who did the Ds have that they should run instead? Newsom was high on my list of people who weren’t really good choices.

And everything I’ve seen recently helps me put it into context. There’s nothing there. He’s like one of those mythological creatures who are literally hollow, looking at them from behind is like looking at a molded plastic mask from the back side. He is empty. He is a nothing man.

If the party nominates him, who has so little to offer them, not even electability, let alone principle, or vision, then all they will have proven is that there is nothing worth supporting them for.

“…’cause might makes right, Until they’ve seen the light, They’ve got to be protected, All their rights respected… Until someone we like can be elected!”

None of this is okay. I do not care for Nicolas Maduro and think he is bad for Venezuela and his people. That is still not a justification to attack a sovereign nation and kidnap its leader. Nothing is. May the gods have mercy on us.

One thing I remember from David Wingrove’s Chung Kuo series is a sci-fi world in which eyewitness accounts are the pre-eminent form of judicial evidence, because recorded video evidence is too easy to fabricate or alter.

Trump entered the Mar-a-Lago ballroom for his Thanksgiving feast to the song “We Are the World,” a song used to raise money to help starving children. Trump himself has cut aid to address global famine and has fought for the right to cut food stamps from American families.

Yes, we can learn that he’s getting a very poor return on a colossal investment. Johnson might end up living a few more years, but in exchange I expect he will have added several more years than that of dejection, drudgery, and misery.

Tech millionaire turned longevity pioneer Bryan Johnson devotes more than 6 hours a day to trialling different methods to turn back the clock. Can the rest of us learn anything from his radical approach?
