Between private equity closing studios, clueless CEOs thinking they can replace human skills with genAI, and the lack of affordable graphics card and RAM (thanks to genAI) - our video game industry is losing the ability to make and play the damn games.
Happy to take part in @wlovegames.bsky.social for the second time. I'll be bringing a panel focused on how you can implement undeserved culture in all aspects of game development, by using the example of our work on Le Cabinet du @savoirludique.com's @arabmisfits.com .

Every card in The Arab League of Misfits carries a piece of our culture, history, and even nature.
Today we highlight "The Voice of Conscience," inspired by the #Palestinian Sunbird (the national bird of the country), representing freedom across borders.

As an amateur bird watcher, I wish I could say I've seen these in real life, but sadly didn't get the chance. I wanted to honor this bird, especially after learning the story of how the colonial entity tried to appropriate the national Palestinian bird for their own.

Tell me you know nothing about the game industry without telling me you know nothing about the game industry case #365
I actually wish there was legal ground that obliged studios/publishers to credit those that worked on a game no matter what their involvement is.
Case #366
Most companies and ESPECIALLY PlayStation DO NOT CREDIT every person that has worked on a game.
It shouldn't matter if the person was a full time employer or contracted to do a 6 month contract, or X amount of word translated.

Why do we keep on doing this? Praising a 'small core team' for a game with 1100+ people in the credits is incredibly misleading.
This PR narrative hurts, hides the massive shadow workforce of outsourced developers and testers, and sets impossible standards for actual indie teams.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg
A horrible uninformed take.
Having worked at a co-dev studio, that next contract doesn't always come and you die the same death as you would if the audio laid off people. The main studio just doesn't have the PR from it.
The Hollywood model has unions and benefits and protections. This does not.
Lower pay? Not usually. It’s just so they don’t have to fire folks once their job is done. They can just be reassigned by their actual company to a new project at another studio.
It’s the Hollywood model, basically. The whole industry is semi-pivoting that way.
Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games.
You've got my support 💖

Did you know that missing credits can ruin careers, yet countless devs are excluded?
Our alpha build for The Arab League of Misfits has a complete credits sequence. It might not be much for some, but all of our contributors (and of course licenses) get attribution on day one.

Not weird is that my partner and I had our fair share of police brutality experience... What I did not expect is Oliver's complete calm in getting out of the way, and taking the teargas pain like a veteran.

Did you know that wishlisting our game wards off the evil eye and keeps the aunties happy.
It also happens to be the single best way to help us push The Arab League of Misfits into full production.
Give us a #wishlist will ya: go.arabmisfits.com/steam#indiegames
You know, if only 1% of all of our dev's team followers wishlist the game, we'll make it into a nice juicy number. C'mon that's just 66 people on my end 🙏

With Arabic and French being one of our core target languages for the game, we figured it was about time we localized the website.

So I'm a little bit guilty of having quite a backlog of books to read, but why didn't anyone tell me how good @aidanmoher.com's book Fight, Magic, Items is?! I'm amazed at the level of "wtf moments" in the JRPG industry. Anyway grab it if you can, worth it fightmagicitems.rocks
Fresh out of the press, two new localized versions of the @arabmisfits.com website because I can't just wait for Steam to add Arabic support to their store.

I love these little inner jokes in the making of our game... In today's episode of #gamedev bug fixes: MATH IS HARD featuring @zein.games (we're both really shit at math)
I know it was a given, but this ADHD powered dev - even though being one of the first to sign the pledge - completely forgot to support the initiative as our studio.
As the great Nelson Mandela said: "We won’t be free until Palestine is"
✍️ No Games for Genocide Xbox boycott pledge signed
Most of our team have been individual signers for a while of the @nogamesforgenocide.com and as you would assume, those behind The Arab League of Misfits refuse to associate with any corporation complicit in the ongoing genocide.
I've been really enjoying every moment of discovering these pitches, and truly feel like this new generation of devs are even more talented than they ever were. Really wish them all the best for finding a potential publishing/investment partner at Paris Game Biz

Colonial powers created many of the problems we Arabs face today.
The Arab League of Misfits reappropriates those exact themes for our satirical card game, and one fine example is how we transformed the Sykes-Picot map into the Insult card Borders Drawn by a Toddler
#TrailerThursday#indiegames
The ongoing violence in the Arab world nowadays traces back to arrogant colonial powers carving up our homes.
This card is a good example of how we designed some to mock the absurdity of the Sykes-Picot agreement and other devastating historical acts, as a necessary act of defiance.

For the cost of 100 liters of water and destroying a small forest in the process, you too can make broken shit. Anyway shift to Godot if you haven't yet, it'll be worth it.
3 years of gaslighting and whataboutism, and even after all the facts, ICJ arrest warrants, and continuous live stream of a genocide in Palestine and Lebanon... We're still going to be fed Zionist propaganda all day today.

Observing these playtests gave us valuable feedback on our interface readability and core mechanics, especially as I was the only French tester for this build... But my favorite part was discussing technical design and the indie development process with everyone who visited our booth.
