It is always surprising to me just how low the thermal conductivity of dirt is. Temperature sensors buried at (roughly) 10cm intervals in the Univ. of Redlands SURF www.redlands.edu/student-life...

youtu.be/E4OzdyxbOuU?... One of the best reasons to always cite your sources is because Dolly said that you should give other people credit for their ideas.
I personally try to divorce advocacy from science. I'm going to use @katharinehayhoe.com's recent piece on how science and advocacy can coexist in my fall climate course to expose my students to an opposing point of view. My opinion might be wrong and they are owed a quality counter argument.
Here's the piece, it's pretty good www.nature.com/articles/s44...

🚨 The 2025 #BulletinAMS State of the Climate report is here, and the findings are critical. Earth’s greenhouse gas concentrations were the highest on record and record temperatures were observed across the globe. Read here: ametsoc.org/soc #StateoftheClimate2025

We have a critical opportunity right now: NSF is requesting input on the future of NCAR, which is under threat of being dismantled. I just submitted my comments to NSF, and you can too, using AGU's easy instructions and form. agu.quorum.us/campaign/154...

This is utter folly. NCAR hosts and maintains multiple basic tools the broad scientific community uses to process large data sets. This is the equivalent of salting the earth and putting towns to the torch. I struggle to understand the wanton needless destruction. www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership. Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources. Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet. Unbelievable.
In October arctic sea ice expands over 100,000 sq km per day. It hasn't reached that rate (yet?). There are historically two periods of rapid expansion one in October and a secondary one in December. Probably too early to say if the deviation is significant. Data from @nsidc.bsky.social

Our final updates have been posted to the Climate.gov website, and this will be our final post to our social media channels.
I'm going to miss getting to make visualizations of sea ice. It was nice while it lasted I guess. nsidc.org/data/seaice_...
