I actually believe "the Internet" is a decent parallel for what LLMs/GenAI bring to the table, in that there's a bubble at the beginning and it's going to take 10-15 years before we get the necessary infra/cultural penetration for it to really live up to its potential (and downsides) but!

My hottest AI take is that the executive class is petrified of labor and saw that whatever else LLMs are/aren't, they're fine labor-smashers + that a ton of ordinary people find the artificial hyper-complexity and scamminess of modern life and work so unbearable that they'll throw a god-box at it.

man, this whole thread

although i do try and hold a more nuanced view like "machine translation good, extractive corpus bad, duty of care missing" i simply do not have the time or energy or good faith to talk about the finer points, especially when it feels like people are simply carving out exceptions for themselves

I've seen it online a few places and last week someone who I agree with in lots of things articulated is passionately, but: the position that homework, nearly all of it, is socially regressive? that it widens inequalities?

Like I can understand the baseline argument, people with resources will do better than people without. but that's kinda like saying "proper nutrition widens gaps; therefore, the resourced should eat less." when kids do (reasonable definition of) homework, do they learn more?

it just seems impossible to me to get similar outcomes if you do away with it. how do you teach English without assigned reading? how do you teach Math without psets? how do you teach Art without a project they do outside the classroom? also, how do you teach someone to do things on their own?

can someone maybe articulate this more clearly to me? or point me to a deeper explanation? I don't really buy it, but I want to give it a fair shake. Feels very "loud person on social media drew a bigger conclusion from a single sociology paper" mixed in with people's own icks with homework

It's not enough for me to have the most successful live-service game in the world, I also need to save money by not paying my workers. It's not enough to have a technology that lets me not pay my workers, people have to keep liking me after I start using it. I'm the 837th richest person in the world

I had my AI agent create an app called “Lunch” to help me with decision fatigue and boost my productivity. It has a few pictures of things I might like to eat. Tapping one spawns a subagent to order that item on Uber Eats and 60-90 minutes later I’m eating. It’s 600 thousand lines of JavaScript.

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

the thing about programming is the finding out is usually pretty disconnected from the fucking around, be it a dev/ops split, or user/developer, or even past/future, people do not get to experience the consequences of their choices and are not incentivised to imagine them either

a lot of people have encountered the overconfident stem nerd, the guy who programs and so everything else must be easy from the outside it does look like "i'm smart at code, so therefore i can do anything", but i promise you that they're like this with code too

Honestly there were major signs of coding's downfall but one of them was my late-career certainly that "code quality" is a pretty fake idea That was the main impetus behind this blog post, articulating a feeling I'd had for years engineering.ramp.com/post/what-ma...

engineering.ramp.comResponsibly mid-size: What Matters, SuffersQuestioning what is gained from "clean code" in actual, production environments.

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

Craft was very fun to think about; truly, I loved it. But customers didn't care, and "bad code" so, so rarely mattered in any business sense. so when the slopification started, it didn't surprise me at all to see coding fall before, say, most art stuff depressing truth

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

pretty clear evidence that republicans in the US losing any election going forward are going to always beg for a coup if they lose. lots of people will have to go to jail

Well Dweller is a really cute, fun Metroidvania. Took me an hour or two to feel natural (after Nine Sols I was so afraid of contact damage; this game has none) but it's exactly what the doctor ordered after so many brutal get gud games

per that last point: I can't remember the last time I was excited to explore a map like this and unlike most of the Metroidvanias I've played recently, this actually does let you explore! and you can do things in alternative orders!

if Nine Sols was "Sekiro as Metroidvania," I think Well Dweller reminds me most of a Rayman game most Metroidvanias have the same 4 mechanics ("got air dash." then "got double jump") and I like when a game mixes it up a little

it's so stupid how nice it feels to die in a game and not have some silly shade/grave mechanic where you have to fetch your shit or lose everything boss battles have effectively zero runback and, this is more a Pablo thing: great platforming instead of much ado about combat
