What happens when a city cancels its Flock mass surveillance contract? It turns out that nothing happens (for quite a while anyway), so city police disconnected the cameras. It is just not in Flock's interest to take down the cameras. www.thedrive.com/news/my-city...

Holy shit! Giving judges a financial incentive to evict people is absolutely insane!

Will Craft@wcraft.bsky.social

Justice of the peace courts in Louisiana allow judges to directly profit from the volume of evictions they handle. We figured out how much judges across the state were making and how many evictions the highest paid judge handled over a year. I want to talk about how we figured this out

Congratulations to Flock for implementing basic security controls that most companies have had in place for years AFTER journalism forced accountability. What other horrible things are going on within Flock and its mass surveillance system that we don't yet know about?

New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force. One used it for five years after retirement, tracking his wife during a custody battle. Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy. Free to read: wapo.st/3UEwWU7

In August, Trump announced the “BIGGEST OIL DEAL IN WORLD HISTORY!” But is it? The text of the accord — which grants the U.S. sweeping access to Venezuela’s oil reserves — has been one of DC’s most sought-after secrets. ProPublica got to see a copy. 🧵

Great to see the Privacy Act finally being used for its intended purpose. I just hope it’s not too late for an effective remedy.

VICTORY! EFF, our co-counsel and our clients have won our lawsuit against the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. A judge agreed OPM violated the law when it disclosed millions of federal employee records to DOGE agents. The court will decide the remedy at a later date.

Shooting at a car to stop a shoplifter is not justified. Even if no one was harmed, let alone shooting to death a 1 year-old baby.

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

Kept hearing from Flock prostesters that they didn't understand how cameras went up with their tax dollars and without their knowledge. I read dozens of contracts and found 55 times the company testified their product is unique (despite the other ALPR cameras on the market) to avoid bidding process.

nbcnews.comHow Flock’s cameras spread through government deals that bypassed public scrutinyAn NBC News review found government contracts priced just below approval thresholds and dozens of deals awarded without competitive bids.

If you're wondering why Flock leaves cameras up after a contract end, part of their business model and marketing strategy is being able to advertise that their customers can access data from cameras all over the country. You may have canceled your contract, but the cameras still fuel the system.
