I once wrote "taking the piss" as part of an article and the American editor commented that 'piss is a liquid and therefore cannot be taken hold of' and I think I'll never receive a more perfect edit in my career

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

Tomorrow! Will there be enough books, enough tablet, enough chat to keep it all going? While I fret slightly about that, why not come along to celebrate forty years of great writers and great people.

#Glasgow Join us this Wednesday 21st October for the Glasgow launch of #Haverin! Pop along to Waterstones Sauchiehall ST at 7pm for terrific tales, tablet and blether about what we've been up to for the last 40 years. Get your ticket at the link below: www.waterstones.com/events/celeb... #GSFWC40

I really loved this Welsh folk horror - dark and cold and beautifully written!

Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head. 🖊️🦑

An absolutely stonking review from the lovely Womble! "... a story for those who would prefer something that is a little less frightening and more mysterious and very very engaging. Offering adventure, history, romance and most of all exquisite storytelling combined with wonderful character work."

Run Away It’s The Womble@runalongwomble.bsky.social

New Review - an exquisite supernatural (or perhaps not) mystery to solve awaits in the excellent The Haunting of Avis Lovelock by @mkhardywrites.com out now thanks to @solarisbooks.bsky.social www.runalongtheshelves.net/blog/2026/10...

look I'd really just like if it the theme and execution of a book could just land fully-formed in my brain, this 'working through several drafts to unearth what it's about and how to make it good' schtick is pretty vexing honestly

Now that I feel a semblance of normal in the midst of my grief, it's time to return to the publishing hustle. Hi all, I'm acquiring SFF&horror for Solaris, now part of Profile! We're curating the best across the genres: commercial, punchy with a strong hook, to literary & strange. My sample list:

Pretty much every con and festival I've been to has given me a moment like that; there's nothing like listening to other writers to help you figure things out.

New review - Sapphic slow burn, an skeptic against a medium, Victorian Gothic horror meets mystery.

Jamedi is Spooky@jamreads.com

The Haunting of Avis Lovelock, by @mkhardywrites.com (pub @solarisbooks.bsky.social), is an excellent blend between Gothic horror and mistery with a well executed slow burn romance in a Victorian setting. Go give it a try! Full thoughts: jamreads.com/reviews/the-... 💙📚

Really loved Resident Evil; 'normal guy caught up in Raccoon City's bullshit' was a great idea and it was executed perfectly. Bonus points for Austin Abrams' screaming and some great monster design.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
