Several parallelish rides, really:
- most importantly, one where the mass of individual users are empowered to actually take advantage of Freedom 1
- one where FOSS quality is higher because many things that used to be too volunteer-intensive (like good TDD, formal proofs, etc.) are tractable 🧵

You've seen LinkNYC kiosks and towers around New York. But have they actually delivered on their promise? Cornell Tech's Michael Samuelian thinks the decade-long experiment has been a failure.

VICTORY! EFF, our co-counsel and our clients have won our lawsuit against the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. A judge agreed OPM violated the law when it disclosed millions of federal employee records to DOGE agents. The court will decide the remedy at a later date.
Tomorrow I'm introducing my Creative Coding students to "data-parallel computing", i.e. shader programming, with this cute Alfa-Zeta flip-dot display. For anyone interested, I've published a p5.js display API and a demo sketch inspired by Martin Kleppe's tixy.land: github.com/golanlevin/p...

You know those old billion dollar car manufacturing lines with all those robots?
What's often not appreciated is how modern computerised manufacturing like laser-cutters, 3D printers and low-cost CNC cutters allows things like this to be made commercially in smaller, but significant, numbers.
Cargo bikes in London are the new normal.
Usage is up 126% since 2022 & major logistics companies are looking to expand their fleets - cutting emissions & congestion and saving money.
Great visiting London-based manufacturer Minimal to see their operation & try out a new model.

Shot in the dark but if anyone wants to trade #NYCC2026 passes - Friday for Sunday - let me know.
We have 3 for today and would like to switch to Sunday.
Claude's estimates of how long it will take Claude to write code are truly bonkers.
It's like how I would react if someone demanded a 100% guaranteed date of completion for something. "Write my name on this piece of paper? Give me 4-6 months."
On Saturday 10/10 at 2:20 PM Eastern, watch me announce the first (!) piece of letterpress art to get @oshwassociation.bsky.social certified!! See the award-winning original and watch me make a new piece LIVE!

I broke this story in 2011, about the first major publisher-imposed loan restrictions on ebooks (the only truly big story of my trade journalism career).
It’s been 15 years, and the only major difference is that public library budgets are lower and what publishers charge libraries has gone up.
In this powerful piece on libraries, this comment stuck out.
I went to ALA for the first time this year, and I was struck by the prominent presence of corporate vendors, many of which are sucking libraries dry…

This is an incredibly nuanced conversation with Clarissa Redwine and @js-tan.bsky.social about the evolving relationship between tech employees and tech companies, and how that relationship is changing the companies (and the workers) themselves
eclive.engelberg.center/episodes/boo...
I hadn't really thought about even simple things like the way traditional strikes aren't as effective at tech companies because, unlike a steel mill, the sites keep working even if the workers disappear for a day
CourtListener is experiencing downtime today due to an aggressive crawler using many IP addresses to hit our last remaining open APIs. We're adding authentication to these APIs so they're no longer open, and should be back up momentarily. Sorry about this. The crawlers have become a scourge.
Great writeup from @cosmowenman.bsky.social on his almost 10 year quest to get public access to publicly funded 3D scans of (public domain) Rodin sculptures.
It has everything:
open access,
3D,
FOIA,
French administrative law,
public domain,
& more:

One of the so-called “shadow pictures” from Temperance Stories and Sketches (1879) by Edward Carswell — a collection tales, poems, and illustrations warning readers against the perils of alcohol, tobacco, and gambling. More here: publicdomainreview.org/collection/t...

Toxic workers impose a huge cost on organizations.
Avoiding a toxic worker (or converting them to an average worker) provides far more benefits than retaining a superstar.

While I am sure they are just as horrible as their competitors, in a world of hack-for-hire companies with ridiculous h4x0r/fantasy novel-inspired names, I appreciate the work that "Sunkissed Organic Farms" is doing to stand out

I like this idea from @nyuengelberg.org Co-Director Scott Hemphill - if companies are so confident their merger will increase competition, condition approval on shorting their rivals

Prospective copyright plaintiffs have started asking me my opinion about citing "Alignment Whack-a-Mole" in litigation. It reports that fine-tuning makes frontier LLMs reproduce up to 85-90% of copyrighted books.
I don't think the headline results hold up: afedercooper.info/whack-a-mole/
But none of these three panelists mentioned understandable reasons for people to be wary of biometric authentication: the ability of governments, especially the Trump administration, to abuse this data, combined with the lack of a federal privacy law in the US.
Not smart to understand how NY state CLE requirements, which currently have me listening to a podcast about investigating truck accidents in Georgia, materially improve either my ability to be a lawyer or society more broadly
having claude configure a new remote server while I bake cookies comes with a modest increase in the risk of a horribly configured server and a significant increase in the chance I eat some cookies
