in an alternate universe where storefront space remained cheap and wealthy people were taxed at a sane rate this man is a moderately successful trading card game store manager and outside the handful of shop regulars he subjects to his petty tyrannies he's leaving everyone else well enough alone

one of the funnier little discursive artifacts is that some people are so pot committed to AI never being clearly useful or helpful that they've twisted themselves into pretending that writing SQL or dealing with health insurance are these wonderful experiences no one should ever rob themselves of

beef is negative food. you turn 1000 calories of feed into 100 calories of beef and a whole lot of methane and cow shit. ai does produce more food than the beef industry (zero)

The semantic drift of “AI psychosis” from “break with reality exacerbated or caused by sycophantic chatbots” to “person with strong feelings about AI which are not the same as the strong feelings of AI held by the speaker” is bad

My answer is: it has never been faster or easier to learn something. If you already know _how_ to learn, there are very few boundaries now.

so far these are the big real uses of AI 1. Analyzing huge data sets better than we could before 2. Automate hacking and malware to an unprecedented degree 3. Supercharge fraud beyond all prior precedent 4. Flood the internet with slop / disinfo Where's the change in our very nature?

"Would you trust riding in a car an LLM programmed?" Oh honey, I dream of a future where I don't have to trust my life to anything a *human* programmed. I have worked in this industry for two decades. You should not have that much faith in human coders.

The vast majority of people I have met in this industry are in the liberal to leftist spectrum. It's a handful of VCs & billionaire executives (and even a lot of the less controversial tech billionaires are pretty lib) that set the perception :/

A penitent who is loud @loudpenitent.bsky.social

Still kinda annoyed about the "techlash" as a person who works in tech and who observes that tech is way more left leaning & reliable Dem voters than many of the industries the left has declared it's ok to idolize.

This is an irresponsible headline and people sharing it out of context is pure fear-based engagement bait… “The Stanford researchers picked the most promising 302 AI designs and synthesised them in the lab. Of these, 16 proved effective at killing E. coli bacteria.” This isn’t a bad thing.

looking at the video that kicked this off makes these follow-ups feel absolutely insane to me tbh. this is all spiraling out from a single turn of phrase in a video whose title was about whether this man shaves his butt!! what kind of standards do people expect from "do you shave your butt" content?

this is troubling! we can’t rely on either detection software or “hunches” because people are biased; consider the handwringing about “proper” language, what constitutes the “literary,” etc. it’s already a pattern that it’s being used against writers of color — 3 Black authors, in this case.

Um what, this post is wild given the top of the thread. Sounds exactly like what Hank Green is trying to describe

Jonathan Jarry@jonathanjarry.bsky.social

I almost never use AI. Occasionally, I’m looking for something and I can’t figure out a way to query DuckDuckGo (AI turned off) for it, so I’ll ask an LLM. But I *never* rely on that output, and always use that as a way to initiate a proper search and find papers on my own.

This is not even about an AI data center! It’s a local news clip that starts by saying they’ve been covering the “data center debate” for nearly a year but still have “few local examples,” so they go to the other side of the state and interview people about a five-year-old crypto mining facility!

Tom Mullaney@tommullaney.bsky.social

I have not seen anything from LLMs, image generators, NotebookLM, or any generative AI that justify the suffering their data centers cause. And this story isn't even Boxtown. youtu.be/9wDr2dec474?...

I actually genuinely hope Kash isn't fired. He's a bumbling idiot more interested in jet skiing and getting box seats at sports games than he is in doing his job at the FBI. I much prefer that over a Trump loyalist who actually shows up to work.

A punitive view of education will never have the answer to what to do when students can use AI. A view of education that cares about motivating students will. In a world where student motivation needs to be earned not just enforced it's pretty clear that's the only way to elicit effort.
