Besides the racism, just want to say that just knowing of the existence of the Fields Prize and the Wolf Prize is way more elitist than thinking Cheesecake Factory decor is tacky.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

I think it's very important that whatever accountability projects come from a Democratic flip in November include dragging the specific people running every piece of Trump administration social media before Congress.

The business risks part in the Anthropic S-1 are, like, downright normal vs. how weird they could have been. Some folks either got heavily edited or exerted a lot of self-control.

The amusing contrast of the not-very-heavy deadlift with the alpha rhetoric vs silly and worth mockery but when you’re like “I can deadlift more than him” you are just reifying the worldview you are trying to take down.

I love seeing neurotic/engagement farming fitness discussion from people with unimpressive physiques or stats. A bunch of six figure PMCs arguing about low volume vs three sets and citing pubmed papers. Just go lift lol

A little AI video of a celebrity or politician doing an incongruous dance or being inserted in sports highlights: I think if you enjoy this you should get the Clockwork Orange machine and be forced to watch the Sight and Sound 100.

Everyone here likes to get mad at Times headlines but I don't see anyone else complaining that this headline says "pull-up bars" over a picture of a guy doing dips on parallel bars????

also kind of funny that it going YOLO with chatbots and image generators in 2022 appears to be extremely stupid, business-wise. that kind of shit is like two-thirds of why people hate AI, and it turns out to be unnecessary

Always maddening to read about a hit-and-run arrest and know that if the driver had stayed at the scene they would most likely get off with zero consequences.

San Francisco police officers arrested a woman suspected of striking & killing a man in the Tenderloin early Sunday morning. SFPD said it tracked the woman's vehicle to Treasure Island, where she had already been pulled over by CHP for a traffic violation.

Interesting how many geniuses on this site know exactly how prediction markets are consistently wrong and yet have no interest in making millions of dollars by exploiting said inefficiencies and structural flaws

A thing that really should be subject to some sort of regulatory actio is when subscription services combine but they keep charging you for both. Like if you’re paying for Hulu as a standalone app even though you can now get it from Disney+ and they’re just happily taking your money twice.

RFK Jr. suggests Americans can more easily afford groceries if they start eating liver instead of beef: "Most of the cheap cuts of meat are very inexpensive. You can buy liver or the cheap cuts."

Hawks and eagles and other birds of prey used to be so close to elimination my dad would sometimes stop the car on a road trip if we saw a hawk. Now there’s just beautiful hawks everywhere.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Having dinner at a restaurant with my 4 year old who is being totally deranged. At the next table, another dad with his teen daughter who is sitting sullenly with her AirPods in. To everything there is a season.

Without dignifying the conspiracy part of this, having the same last name as your brother is perhaps one of the least incredible things one could imagine. Like approaching the bottom possible level of incredible things.

Just imagine how this goes with fitness content creators.

you ever start listening to a sports or video game content creator and you like their stuff but you kinda suspect its just a matter of time before they venture off topic and say something politically objectionable

Steve Earle's Dixieland is also a perfect way to consume the concentrated feeling of this part of Gettysburg if you don't have time to watch the whole thing at any given moment: www.youtube.com/watch?v=z63w...

Watched Gettysburg for probably the fiftieth time, but my first in a while, and the whole storyline with Chamberlain and the 20th Maine is just the most goddamned inspiring thing, it holds up beautifully, what a performance

"We come from the farms and the city streets and a hundred foreign lands, we spilled our blood in the battle's heat now we're all Americans" gives me goosebumps every time.

Another good example here is home repair stuff. Like a new dishwasher feels relatively cheap but a plumber or an electrician to fix something costs a mind-numbing amount of money.

If you're spending all your time litigating the characters in You Can See Everything's truths and motivations and not analyzing the inherent unknowableness of the truths and motivations of yourself and everyone you interact with... you need to go deeper.

I've actually found in these situations that the bikers are usually incredibly helpful in using hand gestures to tell you when it's safe to pass them, if you're just chill about it.

Peter Flax@pflax1.bsky.social

My earnest opinion is that drivers who can't manage a situation like this without melting down shouldn't get behind the wheel.

I understand the vibecession argument truths (that my wages have also risen over time and this is the result of consumer choices I could but modify). BUT STILL, it does something psychologically that now I seemingly can't get out of the grocery store for less than $50 no matter.
