Imaging of activity in the telencephalon of adult zebrafish moving through a virtual reality revealed amazingly precise, structured internal representations of spatial environments. And they get better over time! Great work by Kim! Thanks also to Sriram and Jan. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

What regulates the urge to sleep? William Joo and colleagues identified brain regions that reflect how long mice have been awake. Strikingly, inhibiting one of these regions reduces sleep by 70%, without the major behavioral deficits associated with sleep deprivation. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🚨New preprint doi.org/10.64898/2026.06.07.730682. We show that zebrafish larvae exhibit complex, internally generated, spontaneous behavioral patterns in the absence of stimuli. These dynamics can be described by a simple Markov process with transition probabilities that change over time.

We are excited to share our collaboration with @pheereynolds.bsky.social, Robert Hindges & team on retinal plasticity, now out in Neuron! This work shows how visual experience during early development changes the anatomical and functional properties of amacrine cells and ultimately behavior!

I am excited to announce the latest paper from our lab, published in Science ! In this study, we show that thalamocortical-like circuits in the zebrafish brain process sensory information hierarchically across topographically organized forebrain circuits.

Happy to share our new paper published in @currentbiology.bsky.social! Using in vivo imaging of genetically defined zebrafish retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), we show that while some Satb2+ RGCs maintain stable functional identities during development, others undergo functional changes.

New paper out: www.cell.com/iscience/ful... Congratulations to our former PhD student @maxcapelle.bsky.social whose work reveals that the switch in light preference across zebrafish development is driven by a reweighting of three parallel visual processing pathways. Check out a short summary below!

We are proud to have @maxcapelle.bsky.social's paper out on bioRxiv! He found that phototactic behavior in #zebrafish switches during #ontogeny🐟🔆 Through elegant behavioral dissections, he identifies the navigational strategies related to this transition. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Thread 👇

10/11 Attractive and aversive odorants recruited separable neuronal populations! Attractive odorants preferentially recruited a dopaminergic short-axon-like interneuron population. Two-photon ablation of TH⁺ interneurons selectively impaired attraction while sparing aversion.

7/11 Luckily, @yinanwan.bsky.social and Jakob developed a powerful approach for multiplexed whole-mount gene-expression mapping. Sequentially imaging 68 genes in intact larval brains, defined anatomical and transcriptional boundaries of the olfactory bulb at cellular resolution.

Mapping these genes in single brains let us impute our scRNA-seq atlas into space with Tangram. This revealed cohesive OB domains: projection neurons tile the outer layer, while interneurons form partially nested inner domains. Not a uniform mosaic: a domain architecture.

6/11 But which neurons make up these domains? We profiled the larval telencephalon by scRNA-seq, but many markers were shared between olfactory bulb and pallial regions. Reliable subtype identification required combinatorial information from 32 genes and spatial context.

3/11 Early olfactory circuits may organize odor information along behaviorally relevant dimensions. To test this in zebrafish larvae, we used pan-neuronal CaMPARI2 to map odorant-evoked activity in freely swimming larvae across a broad spectrum of odorants.

4/11 Clustering 3D activity maps revealed spatial response patterns. Two were biased by preference: one enriched for aversive odorants, one for attractive odorants, despite chemically diverse members. This suggests bulb activity reflects behavioral preference as well as chemistry

2/11 Which odorants do zebrafish larvae like or avoid? We built a flow-based two-choice arena and screened >40 odorant conditions in >1,600 larvae. Attractive odorants induced slow and localized swimming, while aversive odorants drove faster, more erratic movement.
