I could not have made this work without @theresekarlsson.bsky.social and Lena Gipperth. Both fostered my research relationships on the Swedish west coast, and this article analyzes a case study of research led by Karlsson in a feminist science and technology studies tradition.
"[A]s a weather and climate scientist who has devoted a career to studying the risk of extreme events in California, this winter’s outlook implies that warning lights should be flashing."
Here it is: My big October update on the now near-record/record-strength El Niño event and the still-increasing likelihood of significant California impacts this winter. This deep-dive post is meant to accompany my Tuesday 1pm PT livestream.

"Drinking water costs spiked faster than inflation, grocery prices and median household income, researchers at nonprofit Food & Water Watch outlined in a first-of-its-kind report released Tuesday"
Kristin Dobbin, with UC Cooperative Extension at UC Berkeley, who was not involved in the report, called the analysis “extremely important.” The finances behind drinking water are “not something we’ve had a big picture view on across the country before." insideclimatenews.org/news/0610202...
"In the ocean, they are bulges of water that lift the sea level as they move along the coast. They’re common during El Niño events, but this year’s super El Niño could intensify the impacts, experts say."
Sea levels along the West Coast will begin to rise by up to a foot this month as a series of pulses of warm water called Kelvin waves hit the shoreline and move north, sparking concerns about beach erosion and flooding in areas already impacted by climate change and El Nino.

Feminist STS scholars such as @maxliboiron.bsky.social teach us that plastics and chemical exposure are a feminist issue. For the latest point of evidence, see this report by @ejfoundation.org, which quotes FRI affiliate, @mayaweeks.bsky.social. ejfoundation.org/reports/pois...

This promises to be great!
Feminist approaches center care, relationality, and process. This is why they are great for healing histories of harm, such as those between research universities and communities most impacted by environmental harms. It's time to stop exploitative practices. fri.ucdavis.edu/events/femin...

VICTORY! Standing O to Ohioans who just gave us all an object lesson in the power of going apeshit! Organized, immediate, ongoing participation in the public comment process has sandbagged a sneaky plan to allow data centers to freely pollute water. For now. ohiocapitaljournal.com/2026/07/29/o...

This is why I keep saying that nothing will change in how "we" (society, whatever) deal with climate change until people with critical analyses of power are in power-broker positions -- such as high management in media.
My explanation of how climate change is amplifying these wildfires ended up entirely on the @npr.org cutting room floor. Instead they included an extremely misleading of the supposed role of fire suppression and human alteration (expertly debunked here: www.theclimatebrink.com/p/canadas-bo... )
