Fun stuff...nearly at a million total.view on my little channel. Still weird me out that almost everything comes from a video from a million years ago before I knew what I was doing lol

Have you ever thought about how your computer adds and subtracts? It takes a lot of hardware to handle floating-point numbers like 12.34. I opened up Intel's 8087 math coprocessor chip from 1980 to see how it works...

Today I learned that if I give my procedurally-generated js functions proper names in my BBC Micro emulator (one for each 6502 instruction)... I get like a ~10% speedup! Was: poking `.name` on the `Function`, now `new Function("return function ${name}() { ...body...}")();` ...

Theory is having the custom param on the function makes `.call` slower maybe as it's not "standard" and misses some optimizer tricks. Either way... fun stuff?

Fourth run through of my undersea talk...and I keep editing the underlying project so everything is out of date lol... I have a few days yet ...

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

Experience the Septopert. Not just the new smallest Nopert at 7 vertices, but the smallest possible! We now know every solid with 6 or fewer vertices is Rupert. Noperts Drop: github.com/tom7/noperts The triforce and eponymous 7 are not a cheeky Easter egg—simply a beautiful property of math!

Want proof of the human soul? Easy. Listen to AI music. Also don't... don't listen to that. But the next time you're in a cab you'll probably hear some. (why is it always taxi drivers... anyway)

Working hard on slides for my upcoming talk at C++ Under the Sea. At the "oh my golly how is this going to fit in an hour" stage, and about halfway through fleshing out the deck...

My CppCon Keynote, “The Address is Not The Place” is now up on YouTube! It’s not often that we get new tiers added to the memory hierarchy of computing, but it sure is fun! You can certainly get ahead of the curve by thinking about the programmatic challenges (and possibilities) this will cause.

Had fun speaking with @bloopmuseum today at CppCon; if you’re here, swing by their booth while they’re around!

I haven’t been yet, but they’ve apparently bought out a huge abandoned government building in Pittsburgh and are filling it with a ton of vintage computing equipment.

The Bloop Museum is awesome! Drove 8 hours to visit it with my son a few months back! Great to hear it's getting some celebrity endorsements :-)

I think someone took my "please try and hack us and let us know" message too far lol; tons of alerts overnight about traffic anomalies as some google cloud based bot cloud pokes at CE.

(it's not a real attack it's trying all manner of random subdomains and the usual PHP like attack endpoints but still it burns our rates and wakes me up :))

Mitigation landed: PLEASE let me know if you are accidentally affected by the rate limits I added. I absolutely don't want to affect any real clients and I would prefer being permissive but woken up by alerts to affecting real people or use cases!

c++ pals! What retro gaming stuff would you like to see at CppCon later this week?

The Bloop Museum@bloopmuseum.bsky.social

We'll be promoting at @cppcon.bsky.social! What do you want to see at our booth? It needs to fit in @inversephase.bsky.social's carry-on and not raise too many eyebrows at security.

Arg. What happened to Google home stuff? I used to come home and "hey Google, play some music please". Today I said that three times: - sure here's a playlist called sunflower - sure here's some (giant long playlist name I didn't recognise) - sure here's a playlist called "some music" Srsly...

Can someone help my pal make it up to Chicago for #vcfmw ? Thanks in advance!

Inverse Phase@inversephase.bsky.social

Ok I'm officially putting out the call for help, Wonderbread (my prius) is acting up and I think it's unsafe to drive it to Chicago. Looking for folks driving through Pittsburgh to #VCFMW. I will need a little bit of cargo space.

All code in this game which did not originate from Micro Power LTD is dedicated to Tracey Dianne Nicholson... (C) Micro Power LTD and written by Gary Partis - ILTDN the Mega Being

Hahah I just spotted nearly a third of those are from one video that got picked up by The Algorithm early on and it's probably my least favourite video! I mean the content is OK but it's early in my video making career and so much is wrong with the style!

Well, I let myself get distracted as to why my Spectrum emulator's newer versions weren't as fast as the older ones...as is the way a couple of single line changes and now they're beating the old way comprehensively... I should be concentrating on C++26 stuff but I can't help myself!

Poking about with compile time consteval programming. Finally understanding why @hanicka.net wants everything to be constexpr. Also, trying to bridge the gap from compile time data to static constants at runtime is painful...

[back in the day] Low level programmers: "It's all about optimizing every byte and every cycle, use as little RAM as you can" Other devs: "Nonsense. We have plenty of RAM" [today] Low level programmers: "Well well well"

Some hobby JavaScript work (admittedly with lots of LLM help) has led to some jsbeeb updates too: hqx support, disc structure visualiser, HFE disc image archive support too. Nice to knock out some very old todos (mostly while I was gardening!)

Did some C++ hobby coding for the first time in ages. Trying out some C++26 stuff and oh gosh, compiler errors are not helpful, are they!? GCC 16.2 and some "X cannot be cast to X" type errors...and std::string_view is not structural so I can't use it how I'd like... Had to step away in frustration
