I converted a text message into a knight's tour. To decode it, follow the knight's tour, starting in the top left corner. The knight will traverse a succession of 11x11 tours, and each of these 11x11 tours corresponds to a letter. The message is a quote from Ursula K. Le Guin.

Geordi, Is there a way to enter our authorization codes by typing them instead of speaking aloud to the computer? Several crew members have complained that they need to memorize a new code after each use because coworkers overheard them. Worf

This is cellular automata applied to a staggered grid, like in beaded peyote stitch. All of these images were created with the same algorithm, what I call “Vines on a Fence.” The only difference among them is how I started each patch. I give the recipe for Vines on a Fence on page 105 of my new book

The good news is that this changes the problem of alignment from a global problem to a local problem. The grid is set, and I only need to worry about one dot at a time. So future-Laura will be happy, at least

121 dots, attach yarn on both sides of each dot. This yarn will secure the corners of the squares to the backing, then weave along the joined edges to secure those too. This work is BORING and tedious. I have completed the yarn setup for one dot; 120 to go 😭

Tags are off and ends woven in! Next step is attaching to the backing… Thank you to everyone who contributed squares to Granny Life ❤️

Granny Life update: About 160 squares here, sorting into a two-sided design. Expecting 50 more in the mail soon, need a few more. Deadline now Jan 8 to get a square to me if you want to join the project and have your work be part of an art exhibit in Paris! #math #crochet 🧶www.grannylifecrochet.com

here is an example of a regular solution (p.s. if you previously used this app then you may need to "hard reload" your browser to see the new search button)

tbh i think one could probably write a proof that the only 11x 11-queens solutions rae regular like this, but it's more fun to search for a non-regular one, at least for now :)

(best I've found is 8 letters -- if anyone finds 9 or higher please click the "save" button or take a screenshot and let me know!)

Getting so many squares for the Granny Life project that the piece is now going to be two-sided. Had to make up a new whip stitch to get the attachment right. @crochet 🧶 Still time to claim squares and be part of the art at www.grannylifecrochet.com !

@mathgrrl.com I’m enjoying making squares for the Granny Life Project. Here’s a diagram that I made of what the basic stitch layout looks like if you want to make your own design, or if you want to color in what you’ve crocheted as you go along for your Granny Life square.

After much resistance I have given in to arranging the piece with colors in a rainbow gradient across the top. The Malabrigo colors are just so beautiful this way! Will shuffle into color chaos by the bottom, I think it is going to work

Update: 75 squares received and blocked and prepped. 30+ more to me in the mail soon, and lots more claimed. Starting over with the arrangement…

My friend showed me this daily web game: Which Year? It shows five photos, and you have to guess the year for each one. You can get four free digits with no penalty, but each digit can be used only once (in other words, you can get the thousands, hundreds, tens, or ones each only once). whichyr.com
