I'm fairly new here so I'd like to briefly introduce my lab and research. I'm a professor of ed at UC Irvine where I direct the Digital Learning Lab. We have three main projects: Converse to Learn, Elementary Computing for All, and Generative AI in Education. www.digitallearninglab.org

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

wsj.comEssay | Stop Panicking Over Teens and Social MediaModern life is digital. Adults need to help young people navigate the costs and benefits, not launch bans and hope for the best.
Dr Lucy Foulkes@lucyfoulkes.bsky.social

Me in the WSJ today, arguing that the relationship between social media and mental health is not clear cut, and bans for teenagers aren't the answer. (NB I did not pick this title, I would have gone for something kinder. I understand why people are worried.) 1/ www.wsj.com/health/welln...

1/4 Sunday morning rant. The 100-point grading scale so widely used in the US is irrational and ridiculously unfair. Why in the world should a student who gets one A (100) and one F (0) get an overall grade of F (50)?

View full thread

3/4 There is nothing wrong with zero grading! The problem is having a 10-point interval between other grades and a 60-point interval between a D and an F. Don’t mess with the zero, but change the intervals!

4/4 A good substitute is a 0.0 to 4.0 scale, which everyone is already used to. That way the highest (4.0) and lowest (0.0) grades average out to a C (2.0), just as God intended :-) End of rant.

2/4 Unfortunately, critics of the grading system focus on the concept of “zero-grading” and try to remedy the problem by having a grading scale go from 50-100. That makes them sound as if they have low standards and want to reward students with points for work they didn’t turn in.

Note that this study examines human graders' detection of AI, not automated detection if AI (which is also very inaccurate)

Reminder for the new semester that you can’t detect AI Researchers secretly added AI-created papers to the exam pool: “We found that 94% of our AI submissions were undetected. The grades awarded to our AI submissions were on average half a grade boundary higher than that achieved by real students”

Two purported mechanisms: (1) Girls do better in school, so were more harmed by shutdowns (2) Girls may have been tasked with more responsibilities at home, such as looking over younger siblings, that crowded out studying

NEW: Girls have consistently lost more academic ground than boys since the pandemic. This is clear across a wide range of tests, but has gotten little attention to date. www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

Key point that isn't widely understood: Yes, LLMs are statistical models, but they do more than parrot. They apply "reasoning patterns" to produce text that says things humans may not have said before. Sometimes this results in useful insight. mikecaulfield.substack.com/p/critical-r...

It is strange to cite the linked article to support the claim that LLMs comprehend text as humans do. The point is that humans need to link words to broad knowledge to "comprehend" the world. LLMs in contrast are just next-token predictors.
