Another update to the dashboard, after trialing for a couple of weeks: a feed of school staff shortage news coverage, the context it provides, and the additional context that might help. shortages.paul-bruno.com/news.html

Some updates to the School Staff Shortages and the Wider Labor Market dashboard are up now: streamlining of the landing page and the addition of a new "Further reading" page. shortages.paul-bruno.com

This is the resource of easy-to-access data for, e.g., grad students looking for free data to play with or for projects I use to (poorly) keep as a Google spreadsheet. That old spreadsheet redirects here now.

I've been picking out the occasional story to talk about this way for a while now. So I thought, why not automate that a bit and integrate directly into the dashboard that has a lot of the context itself? And, again, I'm sort of just curious to see what AI can do.

For each story, I try to distill what we can learn from the story, what we can or can't infer, and what else would maybe help to know.

I assume somebody somewhere has already explained Liquid Death's distinction between "soda" and "soda-flavored sparkling water"?

Again, this is one of my main problems with the "Rationalist" movement, which seems to reliably descend into contrarian identitarianism for very predictable reasons.

#illini WBB's attendance has grown 366% during Shauna Green's tenure, and she's grateful for it. But the Illinois head coach is pushing for more. "Why can't we average 7,000 or 8,000? I think we can do that," Green said.

New, from me, a slightly experimental project I've been working on: School Staff Shortages and the Wider Labor Market shortages.paul-bruno.com A sort of dashboard trying to put common conversations about school staff shortages into more context.

Special taxing districts’ uncertain future looms over historic school board races www.chalkbeat.org/chicago/2026... I know some people are convinced the TIFs are basically free money but this seems sub-optimal, even if you assume that the TIF funds shouldn't be used for TIF-related purposes.

chalkbeat.orgCurse or cash cow? How Chicago’s special taxing districts known as TIFs bring budget instability to the CPS budget.Candidates running for Chicago school board have different views on how to account for TIF surpluses in the district’s annual budget.

Even putting aside the fact that the city has its own financial problems, it's very confusing for everybody involved that the city and district budgets are officially separate but obviously linked in practice in ways that a lot of cities/districts avoid. bsky.app/profile/paul...

I take the point but when I talk to CPS people they don't consider the budgets completely distinct (even if they're formally distinct) and it's not obvious to me that they should for practical purposes, particularly at the moment. www.chalkbeat.org/chicago/2024...

Suggestions for other readings to include are welcome, though I'm also inclined to keep the total number of things to a minimum, or at least a minimum within topic area.

Besides tweaking some of the narrative, I'd been getting bogged down in detail about some of the data sources. That detail isn't as important as its real estate on the page, was being repeated, and is not consolidated into existing tables/expandable info boxes (& the data page).

The messaging around this has been pretty muddled and less than reassuring.

There's also a literature on public sector unions I'd like to see more engagement with. I know it's thin on higher ed faculty unions specifically, as opposed to, say, K-12 teachers or police, but still. We're academics! And it's not...uh...uniformly encouraging.

e.g., 90% of what I've been pitched is about salary, and it's not clear where (or who else on campus) that money is supposed to come from.

This is very cool. Also, I do not regret to inform you that AI is really good for fairly easily creating interactive data visualizations. Because, once again, computers are good at... computing.
